I just had to share this story with ya'll......My mom called me at work this morning to tell me she had just gotten off the phone with my dad's cousin. The cousin and her husband are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and their two children are giving a reception for them on June 9th (my parents and I have already received invitations in the mail).

Anyway, the cousin said that her daughter-in-law had ordered a wedding cake for the reception from the grocery store in the next town (our town is so small we're lucky to have a Dollar General!) but she,the cousin, had heard over the weekend that I do cakes and wanted to know if I would do it instead. They are expecting 150-200 at the reception-this bunch turns out for weddings, funerals, and milestone events . My mother told her that there is no way I could do a wedding cake for that many servings in 1 1/2 weeks since I work full-time (I could but that is not the point). To which the cousin replied, "why not? It's just cake!". My mother, who used to do cakes, told her that no, it's not, you do not put it in the oven and 30 minutes later, have a cake. That the layers of wedding cake require several batches of batter and that it takes a full day just to bake and make the icing. Then it takes another 1 1/2-2 days fill, crumbcoat, ice and decorate (I'm slow, I know). This does not include the time to make flowers to decorate the cake.

She also told her that my cakes look like they come from New York (I've NO idea where THAT came from!) so that it would not look like a grocery store cake. And my prices were higher than the grocery store and I couldn't discount.

So Yeah Mom!!!!! I really didn't want to do this cake anyway since I would have been pushed to get it done and they would have expected to pay the grocery store price. There would be no discounts for them and thanks to my friends here at CC, my prices went up a couple of weeks ago. I am not close to them at all. I live within 5 miles of this cousin and her two married children but rarely see them other than family weddings, funerals, and milestone events and then it is just a polite "hello, how are you?".

Thanks for reading! I know ya'll will appreciate this story.

Thanks for letting me share. My non-cake friends nod their heads in agreement but they don't really understand. And indydebi, I did do something nice for my mom for Mother's Day and for her birthday last Friday, but I think a supplement is definitely warranted! Maybe lunch at her favorite lunch spot this weekend!

By the way, she says she can't wait to see what the grocery store cake looks and tastes like - this from the woman who was dreading going to this event.

Much better then my mother. I wish my mom were like that. My mother gives my products and services away for free!!! She tells people I can do stuff before she even tells me. Like the most recent was making 2 cd's for a family friend (mom's best friend) for her sister's anniversary. The friend had printed out music she wanted marked the songs she wanted and dropped it off to my mom a month ago... mom brings it to me 2 weeks ago 1 week before they need it, and then when Ms. Tracey asked me how much I was charging out of respect for her (she's like an aunt to me) I said nothing she demanded I accept something so I said ok whatever you think it's worth. Well mom flipped out and said I was not to accept any money from her at all! Well it took me a week to get these done plus I used MY cd's my paper (to put a fancy sticker on the front of the cd) and my cases. She was supposed to deliver them Sunday and get my money and I've yet to hear from her about any of it.

She also gives my cakes away for free... The same friend lost her dad New Year's eve and mom asked me to bake her a cake for the reception/wake thingie so I did my best and I made her a $50.~ cake. I got NOTHING! not even a thank you! Mom said how pretty it was and what not and that was it! Ms. Tracey doesn't even know, to my knowledge, that I made it... I put it in a box like the bakery would've, which I had to go buy because I didn't have any handy and cost me $4.~, I put one of my stickers on it and out the door it went. I went out to check the mail a few hours later only to find my sticker stuck to a bush because mom ripped it off the box and let the wind take it... So yeah my mom... not a nice person lol

Ohmygoodies! I will be happy to loan my mom to you anytime you need/want her! My mother used to decorate so she knows how much work is involved. The times I've done a big cake, she camps out in my kitchen on decorating day so she can feel involved.
