or does this sound appetizing: gingerbread cake with caramel frosting and fudge incorporated somehow? I know on "throwdown with bobby flav" he made a gingerbread cupcake with caramelized mango buttercream, and won, but it just doesn't sound that tasty to me plus, with chocolate?

Chocolate and gingerbread are good together (well, the cookies are anyway) but all three together sounds like too much going on to me.

Sounds to me like a case of someone thinking of different things he likes and not thinking about how they'd taste together. icon_biggrin.gif

I dunno about that...I can see the caramel, but I don't think I would like gingerbread cake and chocolate!

My favourite topping for gingerbread cake is applesauce and whipped cream. That's how it was always served to us when we were kids (my great grandma's recipe - it's over 100 years old). It's such a traditional cake for us that I guess I would never think of it for a decorated cake!

I didn't even know about gingerbread cookies until I was older - I'm still not a big fan. I always think of gingerbread as a cake, not a cookie.

chocolateandpeanutbutter - me too! To me gingerbread is first and foremost a cake! Served with freshly made whipped cream - YUM! Not a fan of the cookies much.

Maybe the gingerbread cake with caramel frosting with a drizzle of choch ganche or melted fudge over the top? Could be interesting....

You will never know till you try it! Make a teeny cake just for him and see what happens. You will get brownie points from him and maybe a great tasting cake!

Maybe he meant vanills fudge?...the chocolate would make it more like a sundae style and that's only good with ice cream lol.

I think it sounds good.. .I would make the cake and use the chocolate as a drizzle effect and maybe caramel flavored buttercream or cream cheese! just a thought!

Well I dunno about your husband but my hubby's friend has totally lost it lol He wanted a german chocolate cake filled with Cherry Pie Filling and then topped with Coconut Pecan icing.... it's in my photos... it's not very pretty because that icing is nasty sticky and can't be done prettily (is that even a word?) but I was making this and I was thinking totally EWWW!!!! Rick has lost his mind! But Rick swears it's delicious!!!! His wife says it's pretty good too.... So I guess it's give it a try and see if ya like it... if ya don't don't make it or eat it lol only make money off it icon_wink.gif

Well, of course I am going to say yes, he's lost his mind, but it's not becuase of his cake suggestion! Hahaha! I think most of our husband's have lost their minds due to our cake obessions! icon_wink.gif But seriously, perhaps a gingerbread cake with a chocolatey/fudgy filling between layers and a caramel frosting might be good. I do agree that in theory it sounds like too many flavors working against each other, but you never know until you bite into it!! Let us know if you give it a go!!

I love love love my gingerbread cake with lemon sauce and I'm not a big fan of chocolate lol but the caramel may just be ok not sure on that one.

ohmygoodies that cake just sounds like a black forest cake but with pecan frosting instead of whipped cream which actually sounds pretty darn good lol

Chocolate (esp dark chocolate) and gingerbread are absolutely fabulous together, and a good dark caramel probably wouldn't spoil the fun, either. They're all fairly earthy flavors that I'd think would blend well - good gingerbread (cookies, cake, whatever) always has a faint hint of caramel to me anyway. If we're talking light caramel and milk chocolate, maybe not so much...

I know the show he is referring to, and Bobby Flays cupcakes looked awesome, and made me want to try them. When I have a free day, I might just give them a whirl.
And....husbands have always lost their minds! hahaha
