Looks fine to me. I figure that if it was my son, and he said it was ok with him, I would leave it. We know what should be on there but sometimes it's better to leave well enough alone. I've learned that lesson the hard way.
It looks good, your icing is really smooth. I think that if your son hadn't wanted it like that, it would have been cool to have different paint splatters around the picture...give it more of a boyish look. It looks good though...as long as the birthday boy is happy, you can't ask for anything more.
I had lots of ideas for his cake....borders, paint splats, "frame" but when dh and ds looked at it they said DO NO MORE!!! So.... I guess I was outranked this time!!
This is why we should do cakes FAR AWAY family!!!!
Anytime I go to makea cake my husband says..."ummm, its not gonna have all the who-rah right....just a plain iced cake...right??"
I think it looks good tl!!! especially if its what he wants....but if it keeps nagging at you to do what you want...send him away then do it!! ![]()
.....I bet he'd love it once its done!
I remember when I was sewing my four-year-old a Princess gown, and I went all-out, bought rhinestones, lavender satin, a lavender feather boa, tulle ... the works, even matching shoes. When it was ready she said, "But I told you I wanted pink!".
I was so enthusiastic, did it my way, and didn't pay attention to what she wanted. I learnt my lesson... the hard way.
I'm sure the cake is just the way he wants it. And he's happy, which is our main goal!

The hardest part of cake decorating (and painting) is knowing when to step away from your creation! There is always another touch of this or that that will make it POP! The thing that helps me when the creative juices are overflowing is to have another project in the wings, whether it's paid or just for fun.
I love paintball cakes
Yours is great! I love how you used an actual picture of your son..it really personalizes it!

As THE decorator, I reserve the right to make the calls on the cake. Anything extra they don't want they can scrape off their slice. ![]()
I make it to order --to a point. The last cake I made was a wedding cake. the bride wanted a top border on the layers. I think it would have looked like it belonged on some other bride's cake! I told her I'd see what I thought after the cake was iced and make the decision then. I was glad I was there when she walked into the room and yelled "I LOVE my cake!" yes, the cake without the top border.
I love the little paint balls on the bottom border--I never would have thought of that. I do think a nice touch would be some paint splats on the top, maybe even just 3 or 4 splats.
But it's great, either way. In the past I've had to cover the top edge with a border because the edge is not nearly as neat as yours. Nice to have the option. Bravo on the cake!
