I have a customer who wants me to do a cake for 50 for a pre wedding party. It is going to be outside, backyard bbq type thing. The invites (I haven't seen them in person) have chili peppers, shrimp and lime slices on skewers, and red gingham. She wants it to be basic (ie not expensive) and so I need to try not to use a lot of extras - like gumpaste or fondant. Any ideas? I've searched the gallery here and the web but am having a hard time finding something.
TIA!!

If she wants it to be simple, couldn't you do a gingham print? You could do it on the whole thing or just on the sides, or even coming up some past the sides. You could use a medium (don't have sizes memorized) round tip and make shapes like a pepper for the border, then take a #1-2 round tip and add little stems. If she doesn't want any major embellishments on it, then you could just write something in the middle of the cake. HTH

There are 2 pics of hamburger cakes they are just so adorable and made from cupcakes decorated with fondant cheese and b/cream condiments they seem easy enough and would be fast for you to do as they are done like an assembly line also very easy to serve as they are individual. You cold run it past her and see what she thinks. I love this idea and just said to dh what a great idea for a bbq.

I was JUSt showing these to my son and we plan to make these for a special barbeque this summer. Now, her bbq sounds a little upperscale, but this would be soooo cute and looks pretty simple too!

here's one I have saved to my photos:

Well, the first thing I thought of was fondant chili peppers, shrimp, and limes on a skewer with a fondant gingham tablecloth draped over the cake so that the ponts of the tablecloth are on the sides of the cake, not at the corners.

BUT, since she wants something simple....darn! that takes the fun away! lol.

The only thing I can think of that would be simple and festive is to do what we called "confetti" cakes when I worked at Publix: icing streamers using a tip 3 up and down the sides and overlapping on the top border, with the decorative edible sequins, curling ribbon and plastic balloons -- but then it would look like a grocery store cake instead of a custom cake!

Sorry...my brain is tired.... icon_redface.gif

How about a fruit basket with basic basketweave sides in choc BC and fruit garnish?
That should be pretty quick to do.

I've done a bbq cake (on a 10" cake- not sure how it would work on a larger one) making the top of the cake gray with the black lines like a grill, used candy fruit on skewers, and made circles of fudge icing and made grill marks on top of them using a dowel rod. Just thought I'd throw a few ideas out that might be able to help you out.

thanks for the ideas ya'll. I like the hamburger idea, but I think they are doing something a litter more fancy. I want to try the hamburgers one day though.

I really wanted to do lime and shrimp skewers made out of fondant, but she is wanting to keep the cost down as much as possible. (I agree that takes all the fun out of it.)

I do like the basket cake. I might see what she thinks of that.

I wish I could find some pictures of buttercream shrimp and limes. I thought about doing an oval cake and piping the top to look like a platter with chili peppers on it and the sides to look like a gingham cloth. Then putting buttercream shrimp and limes on real skewers on the platter.

I'll post pics when I am done. icon_smile.gif Thanks again for everyone's help.
