When doing a stacked cake (non pillar construction) can I just place the second and third tiers on a cake circle and then dowel in between? If so, do the cake circles need to be covered in anything? Seems like the cardboard will get weird against the moisture of the cake and frosting.

I'm making a very small cake 8", 6", and 4". I'd like to make this cake in such a way that nothing need be returned to me. I'm placing the 8" on thick foamcore covered in contact paper.
