I have made some cakes for my husbands command functions, but I told him that from now on they aren't going to be free. So, if they ask me to make them for the next function, what should I charge for them? I was thinking 70 for the submarine cake and 30 for the command patch cake. Does that sound about right? The sub cake is two sheet cakes on top of each other with filling in the middle covered in buttercream with a sculpted submarine made out of cake, covered in mmf painted black. The command cake is a 10 inch round two layer cake with filling with a fbct on top. Any advice would be nice. My husband thinks that would be too much.

It's the military, they are used to creative pricing. Charge em 250 thousand dollars.

Hmmm? Great question!

For the Command Cake, I would say $30 sounds reasonable, that is a large FBCT!

For the submarine cake though...I'm not sure. When I do a full sheet cake (2-12x18" sheets side-by-side, single layer, no filling) I charge a minimum of $65. The price goes up by decorations they choose. Carving the sub would definitely add to the price...I would say at least another $15 to $20 on top of MY base price. You didn't say how large the sheet cakes were, but carving is a lot of work!

(Just my opinion!)

I will have to measure them. I think they are actually half sheet cakes, and maybe they were side by side......hmmmm now I am questioning my memory. I will be back after I have measured and rethought my sizes and story. LOL

OKAY, I just measured my pans. On the board it was 22 inches by 16 inches and about 2 inches high, maybe more with the frosting in the middle.

Sounds like you are using 2-11x15" cakes. With that size $70 would be right on the price!

I just took a peek at your cakes myself. My gosh you sure do get that icing smooth! How do you do it?

I agree with you on the submarine cake, $70 at least, (though I might go $75 or $80, depending on how many servings it yields but I think I would go a little higher on the command cake. I would go $40, maybe $50 on that cake.

I am in a good market for cakes, where people will pay a good price......... I don't know how yours is........ the people I sell to expect you to charge more, and if you charge less, they think you are "cheap", and don't want to use you...... LOL
