Suggestions anyone? I'm making a beach theme'd wedding cake for next month and I'm trying to come up with ideas for colouring the shells. I'm using blue marbled fondant (watery look) and white fondant to cover the cakes. I've got some great shell/starfish molds and will experiment with fondant and chocolate to make the actual shells, but thought someone might have some suggestions as far as colouring or making the actual shells? Any thoughts welcome.
Thanks!
Welcome to CC! For the seashell cake in my photos I used white chocolate candy melts, waited until all the condensation from the fridge/freezer had evaporated then dusted with a combination of petal and luster dusts to get realistic colors. Just don't wait too long after the shells dry to dust because the dust won't adhere as well. I had some that I waited overnight and the dust just wouldn't stick so I had to melt and re-mold them. THe bule marbled fondant sounds really pretty.
I've used fondant to make the shells, and like said I have used petal dusts with pearl on top of it, as well as luster dusts. ![]()
Dodibug... ohmigosh! that cake is breathtaking! i am going to do a beach cake this week and just happened upon this thread.. wow! hey, how did you make your coral? just free hand with a tip on to parchment???? and, is there a way to make pearls from buttercream?
Thank you alaskanmom! The coral is made from royal icing that I piped on wax paper. I had a pattern from one of Collette Peters books. I can scan and e-mail it to you if you like. You can definitely free hand then too. I think I used a tip 5. After they were dry,I dusted them with super pearl luster dust. They are very fragile and will break on you but like dh says "nature isn't perfect so your coral shouldn't be either"
You can make dots/pearls with buttercream but it was really easy to make them out of MMF. I used my decorating tiips to cut out the discs and then rolled them into balls. Once they dried a bit I rolled them in the super pearl that I placed in a plastic container. Let I just let them air dry.
Thanks again!
