Do You Ever Make Waaaaay Too Much Cake?

I was just thinking that I can't be the only one who does this!
I made a Cinderella doll cake for my niece over the weekend. I knew that there would be fewer than 25 people at the party, but I really wanted to put Cinderella on a marble-look pedestal. So, for the base, I made a 12x12x4 square with a 9-inch round made into stairs. That was a lot of cake! We ate about 1/4 of the 12x12 and 1/2 of the doll's skirt (a Wondermold on a 9-inch round). There was so much cake left over! Everyone in my family is either dieting or not enough of a cake fan to want leftovers (who are these people and why am I related to them?). My sister ended up taking the rest of the cake home with her because she lives in a college area and knows lots of hungry single guys.
I know the logical solution to this "problem" is to make part of the cake out of styrofoam, but somehow this doesn't seem as fun to do.
The good thing about cake is that too much is never a bad thing, there will always be someone to eat it, and it doesn't spoil too too quickly.
I have done the same. I made a 12x18 sheet cake plus an extra 6incher, just in case it wouldn't feed 40 people. YIKES.
based on the cakes I see here all the time, I would say the MAJORITY of them are too much cake. I mean, how big can a kid's party be? So WHY are there two and three level cakes? or a 3d cake on top of a 11x15 and so on... LOTS of extra cake!

I do it ALL the time- I'm horrible about doing it - my stadium cake - well that needed to serve 50 kids - lets just say I could have served 250+ kids with that one!! We only ate 1 corner of it! But it just grew and grew and grew!! - My cakes tend to take on a life of their own some time!! Especially if it's one that I haven't done before I can't judge the proportions correctly to go with my ideas in my head!!! LOL It's bad - I know - people get a lot of cake for their buck from me sometimes!! But sometimes I find, like you said - in order to acheive the look you are going for it just needs more cake!! LOL
here is my monster stadium cake - I wish I would have stood next to it in the picture so you could see the size of it!! SUPER HUGE!
I too have done it but not tooo often i must be able to judge it correctly which is a bummer really hehehe but on the odd time it just means the kids and adults have it for school and work everyday... i have recently done a cake order and the lady had a large oval cake with a mans member cake on top which i have heard was a little too much so she has frozen the mans bit so i would reccomend that to people if you think there is gonna be too much cake best thing bout cakes they can be frozen. (if it hasnt been already of course)
lol!
My family is under the impression that I'm the only person on earth who thinks it's not a big deal to make cake for 32 when you've only invited 14. It's my son's first birthday, so I'd like to do a really special cake. And if we have a "few" leftovers, so what. I don't see a problem there.
As the saying goes--better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it! LOL! My family is "caked out" from me practicing!
Heck, my 14-yr old was in the mood for cake last night, so she just whipped up a boxed chocolate cake (made one layer, 10" round) and slapped some canned chocolate icing on it. Between me and her .... well .....
..... let's just say there's no evidence left as of this morning! ![]()

So in case the question comes up ..... a single layer 10" round will serve 2 people! ![]()

That is tooo funny! That sounds like my husband and 16 year old son!!
Also, I have a 3, 5, and 8 year old - it always seems there are these funny "finger" holes in the cake if it gets left on the counter!! - imagine that!!
I ALWAYS make too much cake!!! It would be harder to do what I wanted to do on a smaller scale!! Although mine have all been freebies so far - I'm sure if it's an order I'll make what they ask for!!
I do, but usually only for immediate family cakes--especially when it comes to my kids' cakes. When I come up with what I want to do for them, I could care less how much cake there is left over--extras always go to my and my husband's job.
If it's something I want to do or for my kids there's always stuff for the guys my husband works with.
I am terrible at making too much of everything=) For my daughter's 4th b-day, she wanted a castle cake. Well, made a huge castle cake with a pathway to the pond surounded by cattails, then made a 2 layer round that sat up higher on another cake board/plate that was the sky with clouds and had a fondant rainbow connecting it all. This cake was for my in-law side of the family and there was a total of 6, yes 6 people there to eat the cake=) I am still waiting for my sis in law to send a pic of it for me. I am terrible at remembering the camera=( But it was what my dd asked for, so was totally worth it, even though we could have fed the neighborhood=) Jen
I'm guilty also! For family I overdue it and there is not even that many people!!! And then you have the family members who are on a diet and they don't even want a slice! LOL!! I think I will make cupcakes for the family next time! 8 of them! LOL!
I had to make half sheet cakes for 350 people at a school sports banquet. I must of made enough cake to serve twice that! Oh well! We ate well in the faculty lounge the next day! ![]()

Too...much...cake...? I recognize those words, but not in that order!!
I am guilty of this also... whatcha gonna do? Here's what you put on the bottom of the invitation: "Bring a container to take home cake... there will be plenty."
Indydebi...proof yet again that we were meant to be 'homies'. Hahaha!
