I am making a standing up t-rex cake for my sons B-day in Aug. Yet I am going crazy trying to figure out how to make it flavorful and keep it standing up. This is the idea I have so far.....Using an egg pan I will make the body ( fat side down). Now the head I will have to make it out of rice crispi and the feet out of cup cakes. Now the arms I guess out of rice crispi too. ( The cake) I got a recipe for chocolate chip cake which sound great but want more ideas. Any one have any other ideas for a dense cake and how to keep this cake together so it wont fall apart on me. I would aslo like to see any pictures orf dinosaur cakes, it would be a great help. Thank you to all who read my post!

It sounds like you have a good idea as how to get it going. I would also use rice cereal for the tail. Kinda snake it around to help with balance. I would use dowel rods to help support. What might help is putting the dino on top of another flat cake like a 10" rnd or a sheet cake, using dowl rods it might help give some more support. Eh it is an idea.

You might also try the Durable 3D cake recipe or the Super Enhanced Cake Mix (http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-1953-1-Super-Enhanced-Cake-Formula.html), both of which turn out dense (but still moist) cakes that will stand up (no pun intended) to the kind of modeling you're describing. And definitely dowel the cake--if you use 1/2" foam core as the base, the dowels can extend into the base a little bit for added stability.

Can't wait to see pics! thumbs_up.gif

Oh, and I also found these images that might help...

Admittedly, some of them aren't standing up, but they seemed cute none-the-less. That last link, btw, has step-by-step directions for a sculpted dino cake that could probably be modified to support your idea. Good luck!

EDITED to add this link: http://www.michellecakes.co.uk/portfolio.html# OMG! That dinosaur cake is amazing!!
