Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get a leopard print as the background for a sheet cake? I tried using a sponge with black but then I can't get the center dot. icon_cry.gif

after icing cake in the base golden color, add spots in a two step process

1) sponge on the reddish dot

2) sponge over that with smaller sponge or use paint bursh to add the black (note: the black is rarely fully around the reddish dot...check out fake fur images on the net for examples)

It is all buttercream. I practiced on some buttercream that I spread on paper. The colors don't seem to want to dry. I still need to decorate on top of this. How long should I wait before doing anything else?

Are you mixing your color paste with anything? I have found if I just use it to paint it stays tacky for a long time. But if I mix it with something, like extracts or vodka or everclear it dries faster.

I've never done it on a cake; but I have painted a lot of things in leopard print. I have always painted the center dot first, then went around it with Cs, Us, or parenthesis after which overlapped the center dot a bit.

I would like to share this cake, though, because I thought it is kind of different: (there are no center dots at all in the leopard print; but the print, of course is so tiny.)

Do you use Viva to smooth out your cakes? I did a Dalmatian print on a cake, its in my pics.

I iced and smoothed on white buttercream, your base color would be tannish/orangish/brownish. Then I piped black spots allover it and then smoothed them all with the Viva. I bet you could accomplish the same thing by making black v/u shapes and smoothing them.

HTH,

Kat

the pic should have shown up automatically..

if it didn't and you got a little box w/ an "x" in it...that's a server problem. It the refresh (reload) button on the top of your browser and see if it loads then

(we've all been running poor CC's servers into the ground, we're all soooo busy on here..they're having a hard time keeping up w/ us!! -- but new servers are supposed to take over this weekend sometime)

tried refresh didn't work. I have a box that describes the picture, says the file size, and how many times it was viewed. AAAHHH!! I love this site...was up till midnight reading everything, and up again at 7:00 starting again. Got to find time to do this cake...delivery tomorrow!

have you got a firewall that blocks ads and popups?

I had to selectively (this site only) turn off both of those on my firewall to get every thing to load correctly.

You may also want to try the brush embroidery technique, maybe that will work.

yudispad, when you see a picture of a paper clip in the subject box, there is a picture in it. Try some others with pictures and see if they come up automatically for you.

Thanks ya'll for all of the advice. I finally finished the cake. I ended up using clear gel and my black and orange/brown tints. Spots turned out great. As for the rest of the cake.... My support group (neighbors) think it turned out great. I'm my own worst critic!
