Please help. I am making my first baby shower cake with sculpted teddy bears out of fondant but I am not having much luck making them look normal. Does anybody have any ideas or templates on how to make them? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh I am using store bought fondant.

Hey LindLu, in my photos is a blue/white 5 tier cake for "Brody's 1st". The teddy bear on top is sculpted out of fondant. If you like it let me know & I will try to put together some kind of tutorial for you. HTH

i always just imagine its plastercine (sp?) just make sure you keep your fondant in a airtight tub while you work on one bit, for example the body and then make sure theres no cracks and its smooth before you start the next bit.

Thats a great tutorial! basically it is just rolled balls some round some more oval. I have a cake in my pics that has bears with party hats on. They are held together with lollypop sticks inside - I never use toothpicks in kids cakes just in case they grab one to eat!

Good luck! icon_smile.gif

Thanks LindyLu. Actually I used a method very similar to the one posted. I start out with two fondant balls for the body and head. The size of these balls is really up to you and the scale of the teddys you are looking for. One ball will be slightly larger than the other. The larger will be for the head. Place the smaller ball on a slightly greased plate and attach larger one one top, slightly pushing down to get a more oval shape for head. I used just a touch of water to attach all the pieces on the bear, you can always use toothpicks if you prefer. Next make two tear dropped shapes for the arms, two small flattened ovals for the feet, another small flattened oval for mouth and two small ball shapes for ears. Make small round dimple in each ear and poke a few "paw" prints in the bears feet with toothpick. Then you will need two very small white balls for eyes with two black accents for eyeballs and finally a very small upside down triangle to be placed on his oval mouth as the nose. Make a U shaped imprint on mouth and another straight line imprint down the middle of the U. Place nose on top of straight line. Hope this makes sense. You can def use the picture as a better guide to the steps I've described. Good Luck! icon_smile.gificon_smile.gificon_smile.gif

An alternate support for cakes for kids is use spaghetti noodles. That way if the child eats the whole thing it wont be a stick that would hurt him/her.

I make teddy bears quite often for birthday and shower cakes. (In my photos) It looks like you have lots of helpful advice by now ( I love how we can count on each other!) but if you want any more, I'd be happy to let you know how I made mine.
