I did a cake for a boy 6 year old birthday. ( I would love to post a photo but don't have the equipment, and CC won't let me post cell phone photos from my email), however I did an 8" WASC 2 layer cake and a 3-D Super Mario made of cake, covered in MMF, with toadstools sitting around him. He was approximately 10-12" high. Rice krispie hat arms and legs. It took about 12 hours start to finish because I had to re-do the red (it came out pink the first time) and re-did his arms and hat. I charged $45, but feel guilty like I robbed them. I called them to see if they liked it, they said it was alright, they didn't like the fondant, and his hand feel off on their trip home. So I feel like I didn't charge enough for my time, only covered supplies, but feel like I charge to much because I don't feel he was perfect enough. I was able to upload pictures on my face book, if you wish to look you can pm me for facebook name. ![]()
For a very simplet 3D cake I charge $3.00/serving. for what you are describing I am thinking closer to $3.50/serving expecially since you were using fondant and other non cake material (rice krispies)
As for the arm falling off on their trip home, you have no idea how they drove home or if they moved the cake at all and didn't support it well enough so DO NOT feel guilty about that!
As for the 8" cake as long as there was only buttercream filling my price would have been $2.00/serving. And I have that an 8" serves 20 ppl so the 8" cake would have been $40.00 alone.
And just to do a quick math = You charged $45.00 you spent 12 hours on the cake that comes out to you only working for $3.75 an hour. And that is not taking into consideration ANY of your supplies or utility cost (and don't forget your time and gas to go to the store to get all of the supplies)
I agree. You probably barely covered the cost of your supplies. Not many people like the taste of fondant. No biggy. Most people just peel it off anyways!
You can use your camera phone photos. I do it all the time. All you do is email them to yourself and then save them to your desktop under a different name. Like if its a wedding cake photo just label it that. When you click on the download button it usually asks you if you want to open it or scan and save it. Thats where you click on the save and just use your arrow key to save it to where you want like your desktop or something. Then just upload it to CC as usual.
