Just Need A Little Encouragement - First Order
Decorating By heavenlyfire Updated 29 May 2007 , 9:23pm by indydebi
OK I have done cakes for class, for the family and for people at work to keep up my practice...now I have my first real order. I have a Spongebob cake to do for a coworker on Wednesday. Baking and cutting the sponge shape today and doing the fondant arms. After it chills tonight I will do the crumb coat and then frost and put it together tomorrow night. I did a practice one last week (haven't loaded pic yet) and everyone else thought it was good, but I saw all the mistakes. The cakes were awful - dry, no flavor, gross...so I went back to my regular formula of extra oil, less water. That should fix the cake part. Just need some encouragement to make me see that I am not crazy for offering to do this for money....let's hope this turns out well, because I have a wedding cake for very good friends in 6 weeks!!!
I am sure it will be great. They would not have asked you to do these cakes if they didn't already think you were great!!
Rule #1 -- RELAX!! You do cakes because you like to, don't you? Keep that as your focus and you will do just fine.
Rule #2 -- Embrace your mistakes! They are the tools that will get you to where you want to be. Love them, learn from them! ![]()
Rule #3 -- Have fun!! That's why you do cakes!
And if all else fails, call us here at CC -- we're here to help! ![]()
your going to do an amazing job...if you have already picked up on your little errors on your "practice" cake..that means you know what has gone wrong and so you'll know what to do to fix it... cause you know what they say...practice makes perfect..i can hardly wait to see the finished result!!!! just relax and most of all have fun with it!!!
So, I just read the new thread on copyrights. Does this not fit this situation where heavenlyfire is doing a Spongebob cake for money?

My understanding.......
If you are creating an image.... whether you hand draw it, copy it from a coloring book, carve it out of cake, or mold it out of play-doh .... and sell it then you are profiting from their creation. Unless you have a licensing agreement that permits you to do that in exchange for paying them an amount of money for each item that you create and sell, then it is illegal.

That is my understanding also. I just don't want to see heavenlyfire get off on the wrong foot with her paid cakes. Personally, I think it is going a little overboard but I don't make the stupid laws. Seems like if they get profit from the sale of the pans, that should cover it but it doesn't. Guess that's why they are rich and I'm not.

Holy Hannah - I never even thought of that! When she asked me if I could do it and I googled what other people did, I figured why not?! Since I am just starting out and she is a friend, it is only about $20 and some free advertising...I don't think Nickelodeon will come after me for this, do you?
For $20 that's definitely not for profit...That's just being paid for the ingredients basically so you're not "selling" it...
Maybe I'm stretching it!!

There is no rule about how much profit you make on it. If you sell it for a dollar, then you have "sold" it. The fact that someone undercharges and/or doesn't make any money in their business is not a factor.
Selling it is selling it, no matter what the price or profit.
