I love the cakes that use a fabric ribbon around the base of a cake but how do you attach it to the cake without having the seam show?

I just overlap it in the back (or the least visible place) and put a piece of hidden tape under the overlap to hold the two ends to each other.

If putting on BC icing, I heard of putting wax paper under it too to keep the grease from staining the ribbon. Fondant wouldn't need that, though.

You can overlap the ends, secure with royal icing and either put it in the back of the cake, put a bow there, or a flower of some kind.

do you need to attach the wax paper to the ribbon, or just cut to the exact width?

I have a question about using fabric ribbon too. What do you do when you are about to cut the cake? Do you just take it off? What if you(the baker) are not there to actually cut the cake yourself?

I'm going to use the wax paper next time and just cut a strip exactly the same size or slightly narrower than the ribbon and put it on underneath.

To cut the cake, the bride (or whoever) just undoes the ribbon at the back and takes it off before serving.

If you have to attach a fabric ribbon, and you are afraid of grease spots, just put your ribbon down on the counter, spray with pam, pick it up and slide it between your fingers with a paper towel to remove the excess, and apply it to the cake. Now it sticks better, and grease spots won't show. One thing, this will darken the color of the ribbon, but at least it will not be spotted from touching the icing.
