I am making a baby shower cake for my sister in law this coming week. I am planning on making a topsy turvy 3 teired cake. The theme is butterflies. It is going with her bedding that she picked out at Target "butterfly kisses". The main background color is pink and purple plaid. The butterflies are purple wings and pink bodies. What I want to do is make each tier a different color and then put butterflies on the sides and then have butterflies on wires coming out the top and sides to "fly" around the cake. What I need help is my color scheme. Since I am using three tiers, I can't figure it out. There are 2 main colors. So, I figure one tier purple and one pink, but what about hte third? There is white in the bedding, but I am thining that white might look a little odd. There are yellow flowers and green lady bugs, but I am not sure how that will look with the pink and purple. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for any help you can give!

How about different shades of pink and purple? Maybe a darker pink bottom tier, a light purple middle and very pale pink top?

Hmmm. That's hard. I went to the Target website and looked at the bedding (here's the link for anyone else who's interested: http://www.target.com/gp/detail-tab-popup.html/ref=in_de_detail-item-display/601-5306976-9898504?ie=UTF8&parentStoreItem=0&asin=B0002E4LZ4&tabToSelect=additionalImages).

It is very cute bedding!

I noticed that there is like 2 shades of purple and then the puruly-pink, so maybe you could do the darker purple (in the wings of the big butterfly) for the bottom, the lighter purple for the middle and the purply-pink for the top, so it works from darkest to lightest?

Are you going to put the cute yellow flowers and green snails on, too?

Can't wait to see a photo of your finished cake! icon_biggrin.gif

I think purple for the bottom tier, pink for the middle tier and white for the top tier. The white won't look odd nor overwhelming since it will be the smallest tier. Besides having all the butterflies coming out around the cake, the white background will barely be noticed. HTH.

I honestly think you should make a very, very light yellow for the middle tier. There is plenty of yellow in the pattern (with the big yellow flower ~ thanks, prterrell, for giving us the link to the bedding!), and that would add just enough differentiation between the tiers to make the other two pop out.

HTH!

I think I'd do one tier purple, one tier green, one tier yellow, and plenty of pink and purple decorations. Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be gorgeous!

I think a pastel green would be go with the pink and purple.

I love the idea of the pink, purple, and yellow. Really, don't stress over the colors. It sounds like you are in a win-win situation. The bedding is adorable and your cake will be just as great!

Or maybe you could do pink-purple-pink, purple-pink-purple, purple-pink-white (with butterfly and flowers) from the white border of the comforter. Or you could do 1 layer pink, 1 layer purple, and last layer the backside of the comforter (pink with butterflys with flowers)

Definitely white with plenty of the other colors as the accents on the white tier!

Looks like that you can't go wrong with any choice suggested. I prefer the yellow, but another purple shade or a green tier would work too. White might be a little harsh, but it would work as well. have fun!

Okay, so I have to add my 2 cents worth...I think it should be dark purple on the bottom like the large butterfly, pastel purple in the middle and pink on top.
