i also learned a little trick besides the ol "don't use wilton red" one..........color your icing deep pink first, then, color it red. I think it works this way....by coloring the white pink you are setting the base color (magenta) just like in your printer...then when you add the "red" it has all the subtle other colors like a bit of orange or blue added to it to make it warm or cool. And It makes it a lovely red. Use the same trick for making black. dye your icing either blue, purple or green (deep shade) then add your black, keeps it from fading to a dull gray. Plus adds a nice undertone for the black.
I totally agree with the Americolor super red...it really rocks!!!
But to get you buy for now, get some already red icing in the tubes-either the Wilton or even the kind you can buy in the grocery store, and add it with your own butter cream and add some Wilton red to it. Just be careful, because the more "No Taste Red" you add, the more horrible it tastes! Imagine that!
