I'm so proud !! This is my first try at a 3-D type cake and it was a success! Thanks to everybody who made suggestions especially markbolin who gave me the inspired sketch. My customer LOVED the cake and called me when she got it safely home.
I'm so grateful for the advice and info I've gotten from this board, my confidence has increased greatly
BTW, I used MMF to cover 2 Wilton plastic dowels for the "bar" on the cake. The rest of the description is included in my photos

Your FIRST 3D!!!! WOW!!! Quite impressive for a first! There is one big setback with doing a 3D cake...now every where you look you will catch yourself thinking..."hmmmm....how could I make THAT into a 3D cake?"

Great cake!

I went to your photos to read the instructions on how you made it, and it's not there!

Sorry about the directions...Anyway. The weights are 8" and 6" round pound cakes. I used the Wilton plastic cake dowels (2 of them taped together) and covered in MMF tinted light grey. I used the dowel to poke a hole into all the cake layers. I used a small drinking glass to hold up one end of the dowel while I slid the cakes onto the other end. It was messy because I had frosted the layers first and made repairs and Viva smoothed them after assembly. I took a small piece of the Plastic dowel to make a resting post on each end of the bar (stuck this into a small ball of MMF). Then I covered the exposed parts of the plastic dowel with the grey MMF, piped white numbers on the sides of the weights--and voila I was done. My 13 year old daughter made the Birthday sign for the cake. The cake held up really well, I had my friend call me when she got home with it and she said she had no problems, she drove slowly
