How would I go about cheaply practicing decorating skills? I know fondant is very like playdough which is cheap and easy to make.....what about piping? Is there a cheaper alternative to buttercream for practicing with? (and for taking portfolio pics without gaining 15 lbs from eating my practice...)
Hi there!
I recommend to all of my students to make a batch of icing. Buy yourself a styrofoam dummy. an 8" round and 4" tall. You can decorate it, take pictures, scrape the icing off, save your icing in the fridge and wash the dummy. YOu can do this over and over again.
Also, use parchment or wax paper to practice your piping skills. You can keep scraping them up and putting them back in the bowl .. You can really make your icing go a long ways.
Hope this helps
