Can someone tell me if there's any place you can buy a pearl maker or is it best to make them by hand? I've gone to 2 different creaft stores and nothing. I know there out there.

I"ve seen them at cake stores (I also think sugarcraft has them...)

If you are looking at craft stores - look with the clay stuff... I've seen them there (at both Michaels and AC Moore)

If you need individual pearls, it's best to make them by hand. I follow Earlene's instructions found here:

http://www.earlenescakes.com/prlinstruct.htm

If you want to use the pearls as a strand or border, you can use the silicone mold, but be aware that you will always have a seam in the back that needs to be concealed. CK makes silicone molds, you can do a search and order them online, or they are carried in many cake supply stores:

Thanks for the info. We have a Michaels close to us. Also a Hobby Lobby craft store. I think it would be much easier to have the mold. I have 3 tiers to go around. I plan on making them out of gum paste

Yah, I got mine at cakes by sam. You also have to make sure you roll your "sausage" small so you dont have too much of it coming out. I use a knife to take off the excess and also I will run my pizza cutter over the seam so its not so revealing. Another tip is to let you pearls dry a few minutes before handling them so that the string doesnt stretch on you.
There is a different place that carries them also. Its not the type that you squeeze together. More a roll a sausage and press it in. Their a home company that makes their own molds. They were featured in American Cake Magazine. I have a few of their molds. One is the rope mold and I LOVE it! Its www.firstimpressionsmolds.com.

I have baught the pearl mold that hinges and you put a sausage shape of fondant in it then squeeze..........thats a pain. I baught from AC Moore a bead maker from the clay section. You cut the size and put it in between these 2 rollers and slide them back and forth and a perfect bead comes out. Good for if you have time to sit and roll. Say when your NOT BUSY!! I got mine at www.poly-tools.com. I like it. As for the silicone molds, Im going to buy one and see how it works. It makes alot of them at one time. Question- when you use the mold , how much trimming do you need to do after you take the formed pearls out?

Not a whole lot. Probably less than 1/8th of an inch all the way down. It depends on how small you roll your sausage. I do recommend the tip I learned from Nick Lodge. He suggests when your rolling your sausage to find something that is the same size of the sausage you want and roll it at the same time. But your sausage in front of it and roll your hand over all of it. Miracously it comes out the same size!
