At this time I am saving to buy a KA. However I only have a hand mixer right now. Money is very tight and I can't save much at a time. my question is do I need a stand up mixer to make MMF or am I able to mix it without one?

I make MMF by hand...no mixer involved. It is fairly easy. All the kneading is not that bad. Give it a try.

i think mmf will break your hand mixer, it is really thick! I make it by hand, it is fairly easy, the kneading is pretty quick.

I would never make fondant with any kind of mixer. It is so easy and quick to do with your hands, and there have been so many stories here of KitchenAids killed by MMF.

Melt your marshmallows and water, then stir them with a crisco'd wooden spoon. Gradually start adding your powdered sugar. When it starts getting too thick to stir with the spoon, crisco your hands generously, and finish with your hands. Knead until you have the right consistency for fondant. It only takes about 10 minutes to make 3 lbs of MMF.

Thanks for the help. I have never even worked with fondant before but from what I have heard I refuse to use Wilton's boxed kind. Someone told me MMF is way better but they use a KA with a dough hook attachment. I'm glad that hands will work so I don't kill my hand-held.
