I want to do a delicate background of this memorial statue behind the words, but am afraid the lines will disturb the lines in the writing (also delicate). A FBCT is the only way I know, but I want to add the design on fondant. Gel transfers, can they be done thinner than the #1 tip I plan to use? Any other ideas?

The fireworks designs on the side will be hand done, not matching, but approximate. I only worry about the main design.

TIA!

maybe...repeat maybe....this would work

lay sheet of paper w/ design printed on front on top of fondant

trace the background design onto causing a toothpick to press down and "dent" the fondant. (may want to "dent" the lettering into the fondant at this time too.

lift of paper.

use #2 tip to then outline design in grey BC or piping gel OR use very fine paint brush to paint the lines w/ black color that has been thinned way way down. allow to dry/crust.

now pipe on the lettering.

Great idea Doug! You could also do the part below to leave just the impression of the outline or would that be too subtle? It could look kind of embossed?

oh and then thinner (lightweight) the paper you use, the eaiser it will be to do and the sharper the dent.

(I wonder...has anyone tried to print on rice paper using an inkjet? (set on draft mode to put as little ink on as possible??) (hmmm...could you use rice paper in an edible image printer????)

Yes...you can print on rice/wafer paper.

thank you!!!

YEAH!....cause that is so thin (almost like the old onion paper -- remember that stuff from school and typing!?!?!) that can easily trace through it.

(still dreaming of the day he can afford an edible image printer...and projector....and air bursh...and.....)

Thank you! That would be the easiest option, I think, to trace with a toothpick.

Baking the cake now -- posting pics when it's done!

IT DIDN'T WORK!!! Paper stuck to the fondant, mmf was too soft to take the impressions anyway.

Ended up doing a gel transfer, with the *tiniest* hole cut in the bag that I could get. The transfer took an hour with the details, taking a break, then on to the bc to trace it.

Here it is! Not perfect (fondant tears, etc) but I am happy with it. Thanks for the help!

Thank you so much!

The background pic is a tracing of the USMC memorial.

LOL @ Doug! Notice the fireworks placement icon_wink.gif

Mysticamethyst - it wasn't difficult, just time consuming. Try it on a practice cake!
