ok i am forced to make a cake for the fourth of july and i have never used fondant before. ive tried once and i cant figure it out! i have an idea picked out and i need to put fondant over the cake. i know how to put the fondant on in little shapes but thats all. help would b very appreciated.
If by "little shapes" you mean cutouts, then all you have to do is roll out your fondant on a crisco-ed surface and cut out the shapes with a cookie cutter or a fondant cutter. Then, simply put the shape directly on the cake. If you cut out the shapes and they dry a bit before you get to put them on the cake, simply brush the back of the shape with a little bit of water and that will usually adhere it to the cake.
If you have a heavier shape (like a molded flower on the side of a cake) that needs to stick, you can always use royal icing or stick a toothpick in the backside of the shape and the other end of the toothpick in the cake.
Hope this helps!
I'm still new at the fondant myself but I have made a couple of fondant covered cakes. I cover the counter (or mat) with corn starch instead of crisco - I find that it is easier to move/pick up because the fondant can "slide". Roll out the fondant large enough to cover the cake (this part I'm still bad at and takes me a couple of times. My main problem is I usually make it too big and too thin.) Then I make sure my hands and arms are very dry - rub corn starch on hands/arms if necessary, then slide my arms under the fondant, lift, and place it (centered) onto the cake (make sure the cake is close by as the fondant will strech in transport). Then I smooth the fondant around the cake using a tool or my dry hands, it can be pulled/shaped around the cake. When it is how you want it then cut the extra off around the base. I sometimes take it off to roll it out and do it again but be careful if you do this - make sure you BC icing has "crusted" and won't stick too badly to the fondant, and also watch out if the BC is a different color than the fondant (ie Chocolate specs show up terribly on white fondant).
I hope this helps and answers your question.
