I have a sheet cake that I am making and I have free run of the design except that it has to be white with colorful fondant flowers that stretch across the cake on an angle. So it should be pretty simple, but I can't get a clear pic in my head as to what kind of flowers and what colors to use. The border is going to be white pearls around the top and bottom and I'll do swiss dots around the sides. Besides that I have not a creative bone on this cake. Hit me with your ideas!

Thanks Doug, I like the black and wilted idea, however I'm not sure if they would. I think I am going to be boring and go with red, pink, and white roses. Bleh.

I love it! I'm just having a hard time deciding whether or not to do it because the family seems to be a little bit "stuffy" if you get my drift..

I would definitely stay away from the black rose thing....if they wanted colorful I'm thinking they wouldn't appreciate that.

As for the colors...i love reds & yellows & pinks together...maybe some gerbera daisies or roses would look really pretty.

LOL! oh yes...I get the drift....the prim proper pearl necklace and white gloves set.

well then how's about the first two lines from that classic poem To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time by Robert Herrick? (poem at end of post)

and the a garland of rosebuds and roses across the cake (sort of a spread out spray w/ a bow to gather the stems)

say start at lower left corner w/ a strong red one...then do gradually lighter shades of pink to center where have white rose and then gradually deepening shades of yellow until solid yellow one at top right corner.

poem quote in upper left of cake, happy b-day in lower right or on the bow.

(that's a lot of mixing of colors!!!) (now of course if you have an airbursh....)

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying:

And this same flower that smiles to-day
To-morrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he's to setting.

That age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
Times still succeed the former.

Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may, go marry:
For having lost but once your prime,
You may for ever tarry.

I look at turning 50, did then and still do from the other side, as a time to LAUGH!!!!

a little black humor is so very appropro for that "got nowhere to go but down" from the top of this hill I'm now about to be over. after a half century of life...time to make up for being too "adult" and "too serious"

the poem Warning by Jenny Joseph -- this poem being the inspiration for the Red Hat Ladies Society (you go girls!!!!!) says it all!

Warning

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandles, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

of course -- duh! -- IDEA!!

purple and red roses!!!!!!!! with a little red hat w/ purple plume to one side!

(now if only they had a Scarlet Fedora Society for the men!)
