I want to bake a cake with Kahlua but am worried because there will be children at the party - 4th of July bash. Will the alchol bake out of it or will I have drunk 3 year old's running around? (haha)

I guess I could always bake cupcakes out of something else for the kids.

yes, the alcohol will cook out and leave only the taste.

I've mixed liquor in whipped cream for a topping before and served it and children ate it. It's only like a tablespoon for 4 cups or so, it's not getting anyone even buzzed!

That sounds like it would be a good filling. Yummy. Thanks for the answers.

Getting your own kids schnockered from your cake is one thing, but getting the neighbors kids schnockered is another.....lol. I've never tried to bake with it before, but it just sounded good.

There may be trace amounts left, but nothing that would be bad for a child, pregnant or nursing woman.

trace amount will remain. the concern I'd have is that may not be a flavor a typical kid would enjoy.

The alcohol will cook out if baked, but you will definitely be able to taste it if it used in a filling. And, I agree, kids may not like it. I, however, LOVE it!!! icon_lol.gif

I agree, the kids won't like it. Why don't you make them cupcakes to look like a giant firework. Wilton had these in their yearbook a few years back. You take red, white, and blue frosting and use the grass tip to pull out the icing. Try white in the middle, then red, and blue on the outside. You could also put a paper flag on a toothpick in the middle.

Squirrellycakes posted this a while back when someone was asking a similar questions. You may find it helpful.

I still think that a little bit of alcohol isn't going to do anything to the children, and I agree with everyone else, that more than likely, the kids are going to like that flavor so it may be best to make cupcakes for them

Great Idea. I just baked the cupcakes - some had the Kalua in them - my girls loved them. I don't know if that's a good thing or not. lol. I'm gonna stick to a plain choc. ganache.

I think I do have some of those paper flags on toothpics from some time back - I'll have to look for them.

Thanks all.

A study conducted by the US Department of Agricultures Nutrient Data Laboratory calculated the percentage of alcohol remaining in a dish based on various cooking methods. The results are as follows:

Preparation Method Percent of Alcohol Retained

alcohol added to boiling liquid 85%
& removed from heat

alcohol flamed 75%

no heat, stored overnight 70%

baked, 25 minutes, alcohol
not stirred into mixture 45%

baked/simmered,
alcohol stirred into mixture:

15 minutes 40%
30 minutes 35%
1 hour 25%
1.5 hours 20%
2 hours 10%
2.5 hours 5%

Intersting. I used 1/2 cup in the batter baked for an hour - I guess that leaves 25% of the alchol left and over 40+ servings (I think) - I'm assuming that's not enough to do anything to anyone eating it.

I'll keep this in mind in the future. Thanks.
