I used the strawberry koolaid to flavor and color my mmf today and it was a very tart flavor, but nice!

I made red buttercream using the koolaid for the first time last night. I also added red coloring ... but I was impatient because I wanted to use it right away. I agree with everybody that it was tart ... but it was not bad tasting ... however, I only used it for decorating, not to ice the whole cake. So, I happened to have some cake at home that I made for us, so I put some of the koolaid red on top of a the icing on a piece for myself to try; I was surprised that it was that noticeable. I think I'll ask my customer if they noticed the tartness on the red.

i would definitely warn customers about the flavor. mine was a tart cherry like a sweet tart candy. but it was great in contrast to the cake. i used 2 packets to get mine red red so there was definitely a kick to the pucker, but good.

Maybe there isn't enough sugar in the cake to counteract the tartness. If you think about it, there's probably about a teaspoon or so of kool aid in that little packet, and you mix it with 1C of sugar.

Two things......... Does the Kool Aid make your teeth or tongue red ? And what would happen if you mixed it with some powdered sweetner ..... Nutra Sweet, or Splenda..... anyone tried it ? It MIGHT take that tartness away........

what if you premixed your kool aid into some corn syrup and then added it? I am thinking that might help take away the tartness some.

I had tried it with a box mix, so I didn't think of adding extra sugar.
Maybe next time, I will mix the Kool Aid in with the water and sweeten it before adding it to the mix.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions!

I wouldn't try mixing it with corn syrup as that would change the texture of the icing. I didn't think of a little packet of sweetner; but I thought there was enough sugar in the frosting already ... apparently not. Like jen1977 said, it takes a whole cup of sugar to make the kool aid sweet! So, it would probably take several packets of sweetner to combat the tartness.

I don't feel like playing with it now; but if I do and get results, I'll post them.

FYI, I have used the invisable kool-aid to flavor icing when you want it to still be white. Also if you add it after the icing is already mixed and then mix it in the icing tastes like sour gummies. The teens love it!

If you use the kool aid for red, does your mouth still turn red? Just wondering about that one. icon_biggrin.gif

What about useing sugar-free kool-aid? When you make the drink, you don't need to add sugar because it already has sweetner in it.

My guess is that when mixing it in icing it would still give you the color, but without the tart taste.

If anyone tries this, let me know!

What does sugar-free kool aid cost? It's probably more expensive than a whole jar of no-taste red. (which you don't need a whole jar, but you do need a lot.)

Are you using the small ones without the sugar added?
