I am making a 3 tiered cake (for the first time) for my neice's 1st birthday. I need the cake to feed about 60 people. I was thinking of doing a 6in, 10in, and 12in. Or a 6in, 8in, 12in cake. Is there any sort of rule what size tiers look best stacked. Does each tier need to be 2in difference to look good?

No they dont necessarily need to be 2 inches different to look good. I thought so, but then this w/end i went to a bridal expo and took two cakes where the cakes were 6 5 and 4 inches, and they looked ok for the decorations they had.
It really depends on what you want to put in each tier.
I do think though that 12 8 and 6 inches may be a little big for 60 ppl.
According to the wilton guide that size cake will give you 92 serves, 2inch by 1 inch by the height of your cake.

Then again, at a birthday party, the folks might want bigger pieces, so that might not be too much cake.
