Help And Questions About A Belly Cake!
Decorating By gingerkitten79 Updated 3 Jul 2006 , 5:09pm by gingerkitten79
Well i have decided to go with a belly cake for my freinds baby shower. But i have decided to make the "belly and boobies" mould with styrofoam instead of putting a cake underthere so she can keep it when the cake is eaten. So i have some questions about this.
What would be the best to use so it dries hard and is able to be kept for a little while, i'm presuming fondant or a rolled royal icing? I am in Aus so finding crisco is difficult.
How long would it take to dry? We are currently going thru winter so humidity is not an option(frezing to death maybe though lol!)
Also when you say crusting buttercream do you mean it is firm and smooth on the surface? This is the finish i would like for the slab as i'm going to do an art deco "print kind thingy" over the surface.
Do i need to put anything between the cake and the buttercream or can i just ice it straight on?
I am in waaay over my head here and i have exactly ONE WEEK (!) but now i have it in my head i cant sleep for thinking about how beautiful its going to look! All advice is welcome, even the smallest snippet. And you will be rewarded by helping me make the most beautiful cake the world has ever seen!!!
Sorry couldnt help myself.
Thankyou again guys!

royal will dry hard quickly. fondant will take longer. could also use gumpaste.

royal: day or two, fondant longer. gumpaste somewhere in between. can speed it up in a very low oven (warm setting)

good idea to put cakeboard...will make easier to remove, easier to save, and will keep styrofoam bits out of cake.

sorry should have explained a bit better, the cake is going to be covered with buttercream and i'm going to cut some foam balls in half ( covered in gladwrap) to make the form of the belly. After it is dry i'm going to take it off and transfer it to my cake with the balls underneath it (or something, i'll cross that bridge when i come to it)
I got all my ingreds today and gave it a try i made a sugar paste out of glycerine, glucose syrup, gelatine and tons of icing sugar and i found it a bit dry but i got a test run done and it looks like it might just work. I found it very hard to work at the beginning is that normal for this kind of thing?
Thanks ginger x
Attached is my test run. ![]()
