So my ropes were breaking last night...and tonight I went to cover my cake and it cracked! icon_cry.gif This is my dad's birthday cake and I wanted it to be special! How do I fix it? I don't know what to do. icon_cry.gif

I've never had a problem like THIS before! I'm not too experienced with fondant, maybe it's because the color is so dark? His birthday is on the 4th, so I'm doing something patriotic....

Don't know how to fix that, sorry. Do you have some more fondant? If so, I'd start fresh or make up some bc. The fondant looks too dry and crumbly to fix now that it's been on the cake. Hope you find a way and have enough supplies to redo the cake.

I'm thinking it's a combo of the deep colour and the dryness. I find when I add too much icing sugar to my mmf that is what the result is. Or if I try to make a dark brown or black, it sometimes does that too! I'd say rip it off and start again!

I've only done fondant with my Wilton classes and we used Crisco to keep it workable. I had Crisco on my rolling mat and my hands were covered as well. While I was making fondant roses, I kept everything covered unless I was working with it at that minute. That stuff dries out quickly. I'm sorry I can't offer more help.

That blue reminds me of my pond cake I did. It is definitely too dry. Use alot of Crisco and really work it. I used MMF, but I found that if I use a good amount of Crisco and warm it up for a few seconds in the microwave, it was easy to work with.

Don't give up. It's just a true labor of love. icon_smile.gif

It still cracked....but hey. Guess what....I fixed it as best as I could (I added in the Crisco...but still too dry I guess)....how did it get too dry if I kept adding color? I dunno. Doesn't make sense to me. However, I'm gonna cover up the imperfections with a different design. icon_smile.gif I'll post a photo once I'm done.

greenhorn I took the wilton classes aswell, and we worked with crisco . And in the house I put a little amount of corn scarch and then came the breakage, probably thats the answer , it was really dry, I used to live in a humid weather but now I moved to a dryier weather...works different

I noticed with the MMF that the darker the colour the drier it gets so I added lots of crisco. I had a problem like that on one cake and pulled it off. I had used buttercream made with crisco underneath and just kneaded in the extra icing with it and it seemed to work alot better. You could rub some crisco over top of the MMF when you have it on the cake and let it soak it will help it out alot.

When you add lots of coloring - it throw's the whole mmf consistency off. I'm sure you already have a plan but here are 2 ideas if you haven't.

The first has already been mentioned - scrap the fondant and stick with bc.

The second is to cover it again with white mmf and spray or paint it blue. You could use the wilton spray mist - or event take the blue gel color and mix it with some alchol or clear extract and paint it on.

I hope things start working in your favor soon. Good luck.

So it still cracked pretty badly the 2nd time around, but since I didn't have a whole lot of blue leftover, I made it work by covering my issues with stars. icon_biggrin.gif

My father LOVED it!

On a side note, I worked LOTS more crisco into my red and didn't have nearly as many problems with dryness.

Thanks everyone for the tips!

Well you should be, it's beautiful. I wouldn't have managed such a save, and hope I never will have to. But in case I do, I'll remember your post and how you did it.

Thanks! icon_smile.gif I'm gonna try to not use dark colored MMF for a while! LOL

I'm finally starting to get the hang of this MMF stuff....I had NO problems whatsoever with the white tier...
