Ok, so of course a little bit of an odd topic.... But We have a bathmat in our bathroom infront of our shower. Well the last few weeks it has been really humid in our basement so the bathmat didn't really dry out and kinda stinks now.

I am wondering if I can wash it in the washer? It has a rubber backing, It is one I picked up at wal-mart. Also (i am assuming no, but it doesn't hurt to ask) Can i dry it? If not, what is the best way to get it to dry without it smelling again?

I appreciate the motherly advice icon_smile.gif

maybe

first check the condition of the rubber on the back

if still solid and well attached....wash it in hottest water possible.

it would also help to bleach it BUT check first that it is color fast. If it is use real bleach not color-safe bleach.

for drying...nothing beats putting it out in the sun. The ultraviolet light in sunshine will santize & destink it even more.

Do NOT wash or dry by machine if backing is starting to fall apart...it will come off and get everywhere and in dryer could lead to a fire.

(oh and since you're doing laundry...wanna do mine?!!? icon_rolleyes.gif I so hate doing it!)

LOLOL yeah right! :p I don't even like doing mine. It has been building up the last two weeks-only been doing work clothes and towels.

Thanks for the reply. Backing is definitely in good condition as the mat is only about 6 months old. Thankfully it is sunny here today and not raining. So looks like That will be the next load of laundry icon_smile.gif

And how pathetic is this to even admit? I don't have any bleach in my house icon_redface.gif Shh, you didn't hear that.

While we're on the topic...

What's the best way to wash an oriental rug without a rug cleaner? Thanks!

You can steam clean a carpet, even an Oriental rug, without shampoos or chemicals...I've done it, and it works...rent a steamcleaner, or have someone come in, and just do it without the fancy chemicals.

(My next house will have hardwood floors...not carpeting! Or tile floor in the kitchen!)

For the bath mat, you can throw it in the washer on a warm water setting. If you have an automatic bleach dispenser, pour 1/8 - 1/4 cup bleach into a cup measure, fill the rest of the way with water and dump the whole thing into the auto bleach dispenser.

Kills the funky smell and won't bleach the color from the rug.

I have dark maroon bathroom rugs with the nonslip backing and my kid has puked on them several times. icon_rolleyes.gif

DO NOT WASH IT if the backing even looks like it may be cracked anywhere. I washed one and all the backing came off and it ripped the rug to shreds and it screwed my washer all up.

Luckily DH is a handy man to have around and he took the washer outside and took a hose off and hooked his air compressor to the end and blew air into it and out come all kinds of nasty junk that had clogged up in there. He put it all back together and it works great now (knock on wood).

I am never allowed to wash another rug in the washer.

Now I spray them down with lysol and set them in the hot sun and they smell fine when I bring them back in. icon_lol.gif

Hello

OK If you need to get the smell out wash it with some white vinger 1/3 cup as long it is a full load of water and then wash, line dry it it will be clean and smell fresh i do it all the time . This works also if you have cat urin on stuff or around your door outside then they nver come back to that spot.
