OK so I made lettering out of royal icing and tried to paint on luster dust. I mixed it first with vodka, then after that wasn't working, tried a new batch with wilton clear vanilla. Both times when I painted the gold mixture on my royal icing (dried for 24 hours) it ate away the icing making my lettering look terrible. Any ideas what I did wrong?

hmmmm....I'm thinking ya dont paint it on royal....maybe just dry dust it on...????
I'm not sure about this one.......I have only 'painted' it on fondant...I 'dry dust' it on everything else.

I paint it on all the time. It was most likely too wet. It has been humid here. I use 191 proof that dries almost on the spot. Also you need a small amout of liquid to get a guilded look.

I agree with moydear77 - use an alchol with a high proof - I usually use lemon extract. When you mix it up with the luster dust, make sure it is a thick paint, not really watery. That should help. Good luck.

Thank you moydear77! So do you just take some luster dust, and add a drop or two of the vodka? What is the consistency like? Thanks!

vanilla won't work because it can't evaporate like the alcohol does. It's the consistancy of thin paint for me.

I do paint on RI.

Edited to say I just reread this and realized it may have come across as snobby. I did not mean it that way at all!! It's getting late!! LOL icon_biggrin.gif

It is molten like. thick and not very runny. Add the alcohol little by little!
