I am very new to this decorating and really want to practice. So I let some of the people in my church know that I would volunteer to do cakes here and there for free to practice. Now I am nervous and don't want them to see my cakes. icon_redface.gif Eventually, I would like to sell, but need to practice. What did I do! I love to bake and decorate but having so many cakes around here is getting (me belly fat)lol.

Your cakes are very nice! You should see my first attempts! icon_redface.gif The only way to get better and try new techniques is to practice. I've never known anyone to refuse free cake! The problem comes when they expect free cake!

Since you would like to sell some day pick and choose which cakes you'll do when people ask. That might keep them from deciding you're good for free cake for eternity since they can't always depend on you doing it for nothing.

Thanks so much for information. I guess I will keep practing and see what happens. I think the thought of others seeing my cakes from the start is making me a little nervous.

I started decorating last year and am still very much a beginner (you can tell by my photos). I only bake for fun for family and friends but they do reimburse me for supplies (+ a little extra) please consider allowing friends and family to at the very least reimburse you for what you put out. This way they will not always expect free cake and you won't be coming out of your pocket for everything. This can be an expensive hobby and believe me if people get used to free cake it will be hard to eventually get any money out of them. icon_biggrin.gif

I think your cakes look great! I especially like the yellow and green one. You shouldn't be nervous, you should be very proud! We are our own worst critics!

You are doing a great job with your cakes! Have you considered getting some cake dummies to decorate ? That way you wouldn't have to actually EAT all the experiments icon_lol.gif I have even just used the cake pans themselves to practice on.....
