Alicia,

Just warm up the tootsie rolls -- say 20 seconds on a third of the power - and use them the same way you would fondant.

I've never made the tootsie roses but seems good idea, but I have a question, what about the fingerprints? or you use powder sugar to extend the "tootsie fondant"?

As far as finger prints go, you can use white cotton gloves while working with them and not see a print! They are used a lot in chocolate making and can be found at most candy stores.

I've made tons and tons of Tootsie Roll roses! They will soften up in your hands the more you work with it. You can nuke them but BE CAREFUL!! A few seconds is all you'll need. Try to let them soften up in your hands if possible. You can use gloves but they will be sticky if you use latex. The Wilton gloves aren't snug enough. I just use my bare hands! I've gotten (is that a word? icon_razz.gif ) pretty fast at making the petals that I don't have a melting/fingerprint problem!!!! You'll get the hang of it, just practice and you'll be able to do them in your sleep!

Oh yeah, if you use the minis you can make petals by cutting them into thirds!!!

Hope I have been of some help!
