Thanks for the help with Ann Warren, and the website is so much fun - www.cupcakecafe.com
As I remember watching her on Martha Stewart, she did everything right on the cake. For those of you familiar with her work, how would you do flowers such as the cabbage rose, or anything upright and circular without a flower nail? I'm going for instant gratification here... ![]()
I just got up the nerve to call, but the guy who answered the phone gave me an exasperated "Hold on....(groan)", only after told him I had one question. When the phone went on hold, I just hung up. If he is that busy, I would really hate to bother him with my silly question.
What happened to service with a smile?
I just sent a very short email to their inquiry email address. We'll see what happens.
Here is my email reply in its entirety:
- All of our buttercream designs are done directly on the cake or cupcakes.
Cupcake Cafe -
Between the phone call and the email, I have heard less than 20 words from these people. Okay, maybe its because I'm from the South and it takes me a novel to get my point across, but that is just strange.
No offense to you Yankees...I mean Northerners.
(Just a little post 4th of July humor. I do not have the Confederate battle flag hanging from my front porch...come to think of it, I don't have a front porch.)
I wonder if when they are saying they do all of their work directly on the cake, if they are really meaning they don't make the roses ahead of time and let them airdry. They could be just removing the roses and flowers from the nail and placing them directly onto the cake - just like the rest of us do!
As a Yankee I can tell you that even when I visit the Cupcake Cafe it is often very busy and they don't have alot of time to chat it up. I'm always in amazement at how much business they do but it is a very small shop (not sure how big the baking area is) so you can imagine with a bunch of folks how hectic it can get - escpecially at the holidays you can order a cake and are given an exact time to pick it up (not 5 minutes before) I was once told to come back at my time 5 minutes later...lol
So worth it though - YUMMY !
Beautiful cakes and the cupcakes are adorable, I love going in there in spring and seeing all the wisteria cakes.
does anyone have their book? What do you think of it? thanks
My question specifically asked if they used a flower nail, so my guess would be "no."
Alaskagirl3, are they as beautiful in person as they are in the pictures? I am so jealous that you get to visit there. I would hope it would stay busy, especially with that talent. Ask them to show you how to make a cabbage rose... ![]()
I am looking through the cupcake cafe book and I do not see any directions for a cabbage rose, sorry. The rose directly on the cake looks like it is the same instructions as when you make them on the nail.
I did not realize that they were in NY- so close! I will have to make a point to go there soon!
They are truly beautiful in person - you go there and you want to buy one of everything...lol
The book doesn't do it justice. I always order a cake over the phone because I am too busy at work to run over there and then get there to pick it up I see a new design like wisteria or poinsettia (depending on the season) and I want to kick myself for not going earlier and picking that...oh well one of these days I will learn.
I must say I prefer their vanilla cakes over the chocolate but in any event both are very good.
