I have tried so hard to determine what would be the best icing for a newbie, but I am so confused. I thought that I would try royal icing since it seems easier and doesn't have to be kneaded and rolled. But I have read so many different posts about the tastes of the different icings. I want my cookies pretty, but it doesn't do well for me if they don't taste good, too. Can you flavor royal icing to make it taste better? Is there a different icing that tastes good but hardens so it can be packaged? Any help would be appreciated!

Yes you can absolutely flavor royal icing. Try any of the clear extracts; vanilla, almond, orange, lemon, etc. Add about 1 tsp to a single batch of royal to start and go by your taste buds. icon_biggrin.gif

Wouldn't you have to be careful not to use any oil-based flavorings so it doesn't break down the frosting?

I always use extracts with my cookies with no problems....I just use whatever I am in the mood for.....I have even used just straight lemon juice with no problems. RI isn't that difficult to work with....it just takes practice......I am still practicing icon_smile.gif

That's right, no oil based flavorings as it will break down the RI.

I sometimes make my RI with lemon juice instead of water. It comes out the same, but with a nice lemony taste! Smells nice, too, when you're working with it.

Pls read my eply in the topic 'royal icing vesus fondant', TOBA's icing taste great and it's the easier to make, I always leave the cookies to dry over night and pack them in the morning with no problem at all, but if you need details they show better with the royal icing.

Strawberry is my fav but it is pink so you can't always use it. Lemon is my 2nd fav. Yum!

I also like to mix & match. Lemon cookies with Raspberry RI. Change things up a bit. icon_smile.gif
