do you all make gumpaste from scratch ordoyou just buy the wiltons mix where you just add a little water and powdered sugar? I used the wiltons and my gumpaste bridge is not drying. It is rolled about 1/8" thick and I was sitting out in a cool dry place for about 8 hours and it was semi stiff so I decidedto paint it which of course turned it soft so I stuck t in the oven just now, turned off to see if it will dry it quicker. Can I prop the door open and turn the oven onto warm to speed the process open? What did I do wrong? I followed the instructions exactly.
I don't make gumpaste (mostly because I'm lazy) I buy the ready made. BUT, in looking at your location.....I think it could be the "dreaded humidity factor".
I live in Western KY and in NOVEMBER I did a gumpaste bow for a wedding cake SIX WEEKS before the wedding. The day of the wedding, believe it or not, STILL some of the loops were not totally dry. Of course, it rained most of the month of November.
The oven idea should work. I did a tent last week and needed to speed up the drying process. Oven to lowest setting and baked it for like 30 - 45 min. Turned out okay.
Good Luck!
Beth in HUMID KY!
I usually use fondant mixed with gumtex powder, but have used the water added kind before. Do you have a small fan? I always wonder if things will melt in the oven, but I put a small fan in front of my pieces if I'm in a hurry to let them dry. It really speeds up the process for me. That's frustrating when you need it NOW and it won't cooperate!
thanks I put a fan on it all last night and still didn't work so this mornign I set the ovento low and cracked the door open and it seems to be working, I have to have it by 4pm today So hopefuly it will cooperate with me, this is so darn frusterating.
Try putting it under a gooseneck lamp, but not so close as so it scorches the gumpaste. That has worked for me.
Do you have a food dehydrator? I've heard that works well on low.
Thanks for the responses. The oven worked like a charm, cracked the door and put it on low and couple hours later it was rock hard ![]()
