I'm making a small (8 or 9-inch round) cake with a graduation cap on top. I'll make a small 1/2 sports ball pan for the cap base, but what should I use for the square part of the top cap? If I use fondant. do I just roll it out thick, let it dry and place (glue) it on top of the sports ball base? Or should I cover a 6x6 or 5x5 cardboard square with fondant?
I'd love to just make a chocolate square and place it on top, but I'm afraid it will crack.
Any suggestions?

I think I would do a square out of candy melts. You can make it pretty thick by doing a couple layers and it shouldn't break.

OK--I'll try the square tomorrow. It sounds so much easier than messing with fondant.
Thanks!

I just made three grad caps and made the tops out of gumpaste rolled fairly thin and it dried in a day.

Thanks, Spudcake........fondant is my back-up plan. I have so much to do this week-----4 cakes, plus two jobs----so I'm trying the quick way first. I found melted choc instructions in the Wilton 2007 book for a grad cap, so I'm going to give that a shot. Wish me luck!
