We are not doing an "over the hill" theme. But I need some ideas for a 50th birthday party. He is in a gosspel band, and is a carpenter just to give an idea of some of his interests. There was a cake on Sugar Rush during the Ultimate Wedding Weekend that was tiered and then they cut shapes of tools out of melted chocolate. They then placed the the tools into the cakes sort of sticking out. I can't find a picture of it anywhere plus I don't know if I am that skilled!!! So any ideas would be muchly appreciated!!!!

I also seen a cake that was done with the numbers 5 0 with edible pictures of the person in the numbers.

well, found the web site for the designer:
Michael Howard
-- (warning, there is one part of his site - That "Girl" - that some might find offensive! Adults should preview this and several of the cake galleries before letting small/impressionable children view them)

BUT ...

he doesn't have the cake posted there.

I saw the show too....

all he did was to pour out a slabs (white, milk --- tho' I'd do dark instead of milk) of tempered chocolate and then cut the shapes while it was still soft.

for many of the shapes he just freehanded the cutting.

for others -- like the circular saw blade -- he used a cardboard template and traced.

neat trick for teeth on edge of hand saw --- use a toothed decorators comb and put into edge of blade and pulled away..instant teeth!

if not good at freehanding...

1) find coloring book pages of tools, glue to cardboard/oak tag/card stock and cut and trace.

2) use real tools, trace onto cardboard/etc. and cut out -- tho' this would work only for a really big cake!!

Make the tools out of fondant. That way they can be any size you choose.
