Question About Filling

I have looked in the recipe section for strawberry filling. The ones I've found seem to be of a jelly nature. Do you put a layer of buttrecream and then the filling or just the filling? Seems weird to me as I've always mixed my fruit with the buttercream for a creamy type of filling.

I put a thin layer of buttercreme down first, then add a small amount of filling, only after making a buttercreme damn around the edge first.
