Refridgerate?

Do you need to refridgerate cakes decorated with icing? I see a lot of the icing recipes on here call for milk. If the milk isn't cooked (like it usually isn't with icing), won't it go bad at room temperature?

I've heard that the sugar acts as a preservative.
