i am wondering how you all make your sypport systems when assembling a 3D cake. i have books that indicate they just use wooden dowels, 1/4 boards screwed into the tops on the dowels for platforms and so on. but its typically wood from the hardware store. are dowels for the hardware store not sprayed with chemicals???
what else can be used in stead???

thanks

You can get dowels from the cake store that are food safe. or you can use heavy duty straws instead.

the supply store i go to, don`t carry any wooden dowels larger than 12 inches... and they are not very thick.

straws won`t do, as i need to screw supports into the base board.

I use plumbing supplies. They carry water and are food safe.

Depending on the cake you are doing, you don't always need to screw the dowels in a wooden board. If the cake on the small side sometimes I stack using dowels and boards and then drive one or more sharpened dowel all the way down through into the bottom board. If I'm using sharpened dowels than I make sure to use foamcore or cardboard for my base so the dowel will pierce into it. This has worked great for me so far, but it will depend a lot on what kind of sculpture you are making. For examle, on my standing dino cake I did use dowels and screws, but on my sitting princess cake I didn't use screws. The dragons I just used glue and wood boards.

Good luck!
