I have tried this a few times and when I actually get it to peel off of the wax paper (which it's never come off all in one piece yet) it is never smooth. It always has little holes and cracks. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

I never use wax paper because it does what it does. I use acetate sheets that you can buy at an office supply store and now I have discovered the clear plastic material they sell at cloth stores in all different weights. I think people make table covers out of it. Not sure though. It is very wide and very affordable. I like to cover my whole work area with it to help clean easier. I think you will be pleased with the results if you change over to a heavier material. It also helps give a shiny finish. As far as the holes I have used a smaller tip to fill in the edges really good where the different colors meet the outlines. If you are not sure some people use a toothpick to move the bc around but I haven't had good results with that. I just take my time and make sure to fill it in good. With the heavier material you can actually pick it up and drop it (very slightly) a couple of times and that will even things out too. I hope you will try the heavier material. It is reusable and you WILL be pleased. Also it is really good for rolling out MMF or cookies!

If you are using wax paper, you have to work VERY quickly before the heat melts the icing - which happens fast. For the holes in your pic, what I do is after I've completed filling in the "drawing" I let it crust a bit then usings my finger dipped in cornstartch, I remove the paper that I taped to my glass to trace, and push the icing in. I hope this helps you some.

I do my FBCT a little differently than described here but wanted to say that if you put the FBCT on the cake, let it thaw a little, then melvira it or viva paper towel it with the fondant smoother, it takes care of any little holes or air pockets!

I use a sponge paint roller to smooth the FBCT after the design is finished. Then I add my background layer of icing and use the roller again to smooth it. After it is frozen and transferred to the cake I use the roller again. I can get them slick that way thumbs_up.gif
