I'm also in California and yes. It's mighty hot out here. How about dry ice? Can you keep a fondant covered cake in dry ice?

Not sure where you'd find it, but I how about an ice pak made up of little "pockets". I know the restaurant supply places have it. We use it in our chiro office as ice paks for patients. I'll see if I can find a link and post it.

It would be going to L.A.... about 5 mins from LAX. It is a keeper tier...from the wedding cake i did last summer for bobbi sue luther and rob hall...it really doesnt have to be all perfect LOOKING when it gets there...just fresh and tasty...and not totally smashed...you CAN refrigerate fondant but it makes it all shiny. I was thinking dry ice, but wasnt sure how to package it. It is to be a 6 in 2 layered square covered in cream cheese icing and satin ice fondant. Thanks so much guys for any input!

Be sure to use some type of strofoam box, too. I ordered live lobster once, but I can't remember what they used for ice; I know it wasn't dry ice. I don't think dry ice lasts as long as ice packs (from personal experience while camping). Maybe you can contact some lobster shipping companies and get some info (many are listed on the web).

I am thinking of shipping it in a small styro cooler..like the 6-pk sized ones.

I tried to send a cheesecake packed with dry ice and ran into some issues due to the fact that the dry ice is considered "hazardous material". I was told that the charges to send a package with dry ice would be astronomical ...so, the ice packs might be a much more economical way to go!

so you guys think that securing it in the small styro cooler and using ice packs and shipping next day air it would be ok?

I think it's going to be ok considering it's Next Day air. Go for it!

I have shipped a fondant covered cake using dry ice. You can pack up to 5 lbs of dry ice before it falls under hazardous materials. This is the rule for both USPS and UPS.
