So before anyone lectures me I know im a horriable pet owner icon_sad.gif but i have two stricktly indoor cats. and well my youngies kiki whos one and a half got out a few weeks back and I picked her up the other day and shes prego's and im at a loss for what to do the vet says they can do a spay but that it complicates the situation because shes prego's I just dont know what to do. Do I allow her to have the kittens and then try to find homes for them or do I go ahead with the spay? thanks for your help in advance this is a really difficult choice for me.

If she's only a few weeks pregnant, I would have her spayed now. (JMHO.)

I would let her have the kittens and try to find homes for them before they are even born ... relatives, friends, co workers etc., if that doesnt work wait until they are born and give them away at wal mart krogers etc., and then have her spayed ... good luck!!

Let her have the kittens then have her spayed. And spay the other, too. Plus keep the doors closed tighter. You are not a bad pet owner. Cats tend to get out if they want and any opportunity is seen and taken advantage of. If you can't give the kittens away yourself you can take them to a no kill shelter or the humane society. There are always people who are looking for the cute kittens and puppies. It will aslo cost more to spay the cat if she is pregnant.

I would let her have the kittens before spaying her. It really is more of a health risk to her to be spayed while pregnant. It's not worth the risk to her life and hopefully you won't have too much trouble finding good homes for her kittens. I'm sure you will enjoy them until they go to their new homes!!

If cost is a consideration, it's still going to be less expensive to neuter one pregnant female than a whole litter. (In my area, neutering a male kitten is $100.00.)

I speak from LOTS of experience..Vet tech 15 years... If she is very far along-let her have the kittens. It is very sad to spay a cat who is due in the next few days. If she is less than half way through the preg.I would spay her. The surg. is slightly more complicated and cost is usually 10-20 dollars more because of it. The blood vessels in the area are enlarged during this time and more care is needed to stop bleeding, however in my practice (7 doctors ) I figure we do one a week during heat cycles. We have little to no complications.

It is very difficult to find responsible homes for pets. By responsible, I mean someone who will look after them for the rest of their lives, not just while they are cute and cuddly.

I don't mean to preach, that is not my intention, my intention is to inform. One intact female if she has an average of 6 kittens a heat and two pregnancies a year can create 120 cats by herself, that is not counting the kittens her offspring will create.

Thankyou for the info janh I will read it. It is very hard in my rural area to find homes for kittens the humaine society in reno will spay her for 40 dollars so its not a cost consideration. I would not consider it if she were to far along but its my guess thats she is about 3 or 4 weeks into this so half way. the humaine society will not take the kittens because I do not live in that county and the animal shelter here is not a no kill shelter. I had to once before for our older cat years ago bring kittens into a shelter after trying for months to find a good home with no luck and it was beyond heartbreaking for me. I guess I should have learned my lesson that time.
