Need advice on how to make gumpaste roses dry nicely....if I hang them upside down from the wire, the petals hang down and look stupid. If I prop them upright in an egg carton, they flop over and look stupid. How do you folks to make the beautiful perfect roses make those petals stay open and pretty? Is it the humidity in my house (Ohio in the spring)? Is it my technique? Why do my roses always end up looking like the elephant man? Thanks!!!

I stick mine in a block of styrofoam icon_smile.gif It works really good. Just don't use too much water to put them together or they will droop, thats probably the problem.

You may be rolling the gumpaste too thick, the weight could cause the petals to sag. You want to roll it thin enough to be able to see through. When you are doing the all in one or Easy rose only the center is wired and you build the petals around it, only using very small amounts of gum glue to hold them in place. Here is a good little tutorial on doing this type of rose. I do still hang them upside down to dry but with rolling the paste thin enough the petals stay in place and don't tend to droop or sag.

That's a neat tutorial I had never seen...very different from how I was trying it (individual petals all cut out by themselves). I'll give that a try. Thanks, guys!

Hi, if doing each petal individually, i find it helpful to have little bits of cotton put in between the petals works. Just use a tweezer to insert in the petals to achieve the desired effect. Also I pit mine either in an egg tray or an apple tray, the ones you get from supermarket, The come in big squres of em.

Have to agree with Shirley. Roses when rolled out have to be thin. (I know you know this) just saying if to thick, they will bend. Gumpaste is tricky. I do more flowers than cakes.

Thanks Shirley W. I need to give the gumpaste roses a try. I've made fondant roses, and they were sooo time consuming. I'm hoping that the gumpaste roses are much easier, since they will dry quicker. My fondant roses tend to droop to much.

My Wilton instructor taught me to put my roses in the little candy wrappers ( look like mini cupcake shells). It holds them well .

i put my wires through the small candy cup wrappers... and i use them over and over again it helps keep the petals UP where they belong my wilton instructor, Kay taught us that trick, and I tell ya i've had no problems with my roses, fondant or otherwise. I just wish I didn't have to do so many.. they tend to irritate me

when doing individual petals, I wire each of the last petals, and don't attach those until they are dry. I do dry upsidedown until the last row of petals.
