I am thinking about making 41/2-6 dozen cupcakes for my uncles 4th of July gathering this Sat. No one asked me to make them I just want to to show of my work and maybe get some buisness, some people think i'm crazy, some say go for it, I am also going to make a small 6 inch and use the new wilton stand to display. Plus I have a small cake due Sat. for a 1st birthday. What would you all do, go ahead with the plan or just do the paid cake and not worry about the cupcakes( which would be done at my expense). I will have family there that don't even know that I am doing cakes plus lots of friends of the family.

I would do the cupcakes. They can be very time consuming though especially if you want to showcase your talent.

I started out gifting and making sample cakes for family, friends, and co-workers. It paid off in the long run. If you have the time and can afford it, I would go ahead and make the cupcakes.

Go for it if you're up to it-- I'm sure they'd love it and it may drum up some business. But for me, if I had the choice I'd do a sheet cake-- big cupcake orders take me forever! (unless you're doing the swirl!) Happy decorating! :O)

I would try to do the cupcakes too. I would suggest making all of the cakes ahead of time. I store my cupcakes in a large (at least a gallon) ziplock bag. They stay nice and moist for the few days on the counter before I frost them. Any longer than that and I would refrigerate them.

If you are doing any decorations on top you could do them in royal icing and have them done before hand too. Maybe little flags....?

I say go for it, if you have the time. Could definitely be beneficial for the business.

wow thanks for all the replies!
Well you all definatly made my mind up, I am going to go for it.
I am just going to do a swirl on the cupcakes but I'm going to make a 6 or 8 inch round to kind of show off my work, I'm still learning so it's not much! So far people have loved the taste and look of my cakes so hopefully it will get me some buisness.
My plan is to use the new wilton stand and put white and red iced cupcakes on the two bottom plates and put the round on the top, it will be blue with of course white stars.
Just something simple.
oh the cupcakes are going to be filled with a twinkie like filling.
well off to the store!
thanks!

I would personally do a sheet cake or a large 4th of july cake. I'm just not a big fan of cupcakes. I know it's strange because they are the same thing (taste wise) I just perfer a sliced cake. Maybe it's the whole icing on your nose thing...lol....

In all reality though, if its going to be outside cupcakes may work best, so you don't have to stand there and serve, etc.

Good luck

Make them! Word-of-Mouth can be some of your best advertising.

My advice----You need to go ahead and decide on your price list and policy for family orders before the party. This will save you a headache in the future.

It will be outside, but was thinking of keeping the cupcakes inside. at least until dinner was over, hugh bbq, it's pretty much come n go, all day so I think the cupcakes would be better than a sheet cake, plus LOTS of small children,.

Already have a price list made up, will give a little discount to family.

Now how to get them there, it is in the middle of nowhere and about a 30 minute drive from my home, if not farther and you have to drive doen a LONG dirt/gravel road to get to the farm!

Will the icing melt if they are in the trunk?
