Dumb Question Cover Cardboard Layers Between Stacked Cake?

Covering the boards is always a good idea. Contact or foil, or whatever, will keep the board from absorbing moisture from your cake.

Are you talking about the BASE of the cake....or the cardboard circles/sheets underneath each tier? I use foodsafe cardboard from a cake supply store under each tier....NOT COVERED WITH ANYTING....and use papers made for wrapping the base cardboard. Also...I triple the bottom cardboard before covering with foodsafe wrapping paper. Some people I know use butcher paper. Cheaper....but plain.
My Wilton instructor taught us an economical alternative to make cake boards by cutting out a piece of cardboard COVERED with aluminum foil and taping it on the back of the cardboard. I've used it several times since it looks pretty beneath the cut cake (careful not to cut into it when serving). And easy to use it you have an odd shaped cake. Wilton also makes pre-cut cake circles that are coated that make it a breeze to decorate on (easy to wipe off excess icing).
(Almost finished with this chapter..lol)
Also the cake dividers make it easier to slice and serve the cake. ![]()
i went to a bakery shop awhile back and picked up a huge white board, it's one of those that you can wash and re-use. it's pretty big, i made a 16 inch square plus 2- 6 inches rounds and all three fit very nicely w/room around, and they also sold a box perfect for it. of course this is something you would want returned. but usually i cut my own plates out of cardboard or just buy them. i also just bought myself some foamboard to try out. and I cover them all w/freezer paper, and im now just starting w/contact paper.
