Is Fondant Supposed To Taste Bad

Everyone I have talked to says fandant taste bad, does it. Also what is buttercream?
I think one reason you hear so much negativity about fondant taste is that in the US we are used to the much sweeter frostings, such as buttercream. It has a completely different taste and texture than most people expect to find on a cake. Some recipes for fondant don't taste bad but they aren't my favorite thing to eat! It is used quite a bit in Europe so I'm sure they have a completely different opinion on fondant.
Buttercream the typical frosting you will find on a cake in the US. There are many, many recipes for bc. Some of the basice ingredient you will find include butter, shortening, extracts, milk, heavy cream, powdered sugar. The ingredients will change the taste and consistency and ways you can use the bc for decorating or withstanding higher temperatures that the cake might be exposed to.
before judging fondant on taste i would try marshmallow fondant and satin ice. you can make your own marshmallow fondant (mmf) very easily, very cheaply, and it tastes good. what some people don't like is the texture, in the US we're not used to chewing our frosting. but the taste itself isn't bad. the look is beautiful (imho) and its easy for me to work with, so i encourage customers and friends to try my mmf at least once. if they really hate it, thats fine, they can just eat the cake with the filling (as my cakes are filled quite generously) or they can only order cakes in bc.

it really can be like a whole other language. janh started giving this link to all new comers to the forum, and i think thats a great idea!
Here is the link to the MMF recipe I use and love. I do add flavorings(vanilla, almond, butter extracts) in place of the liquid and it really makes it taste great. Also, make sure to add the powdered sugar slowly, while kneading it in. Most of the time you will NOT need all the powdered sugar the recipe calls for=)
