Well i agree with the first poster- I once did a western cake for the bride and once she found her topper I made my decorations around that theme and he wanted an armadillo for the grooms cake. Turned out great. The thing is too look at different style cakes and have her pick the things she likes AND dislikes about each and do a brief design sketch maybe. I like the tiki for the groom and maybe a volcano/island for the brides cake because you could do a three tier deal and work out the design on it.
Some people don't like the obvious "themed" hawaiian cakes (beach theme, hula dancers, etc.)... but a more elegant cake with a few hawaiian flowers on it.
I'd give her a few options of each type of cake... fun as well as formal.
what about flip flops? It seems the latest rage around here with luau parties... I have even had a request for a pair of man's flops, haven't done it yet because his Birthday isn't until July, but it would be fun! Also the wilton palm tree pan in cute, I have one my photos... you could do something like that!
I can do the cakes with tons of piping on them, but my personal preference is for the more clean and simple wedding cakes.
My first thought was a three tiered stacked square cake, smooth iced with a cascade of tropical flowers down one corner of the cake.
You could further incorporate a tropical theme by using tropical flavors, such as a coconut flavored cake with mango and passion fruit fillings.
