Its always fantastic when a cake turns out better than you imagined. But my best cake day ever had nothing to do with the cake. I made a cake for teacher appreciation day, just posted it in the gallery (my first post very exciting!). I have 2 kids in elementary school. The morning we took it in they were so excited they wanted to help carry it and show everyone. I stayed and volunteered to help with the teacher luncheon. A few hours later a teacher told me she had to introduce me to someone. We walked down the hall, I saw my son he walked with us. The teacher said to another teacher this is the cake lady. My son said, with a grin on his face "Yeah Mrs. B and she's my mom!". He grabbed me and hugged me. He was so proud. My best cake day ever was not showing off a cake as much as it was my 9 year old showing off his mom. Wanted to share the story and see if anyone else has a "best cake day" story to share.

That is so sweet! My best cake day was actually a few days after delivery of a cake for a little boy I don't know at all. He is blind and deaf so to recieve a beautiful thank you card with a very nice message - written by him - not mom,was very touching.

My best cake day came on my best friend's wedding. It was my gift to her and I was so scared making it as I had NEVER attemped anything like that before, but she loved it and everyone there was so impressed and lots of photos and everything. It just felt so nice to feel I did something really nice for my friend and that she really was appreciative and it went beyond her expectations. It wasnt' even stellar, but it was a real wedding cake and that's what matters!

My best cake day was when I baked a birthday cake for my best friend. Initially, I thought it was going to be awful. Not just the pressure of getting everything "perfect," but also the fact that I found out a couple of days before the party that her boyfriend's sister was also going to celebrate her birthday at the party. It all worked out great though. I already had my friend's cake planned out and I just asked her boyfriend what kind of cake his sister liked best. Both cakes turned out great (they are the Dark chocolate caramel double-chocolate pirouline cookie birthday cake (b-friend) and the Lemon-scented white sponge cake with milk chocolate ganache (boyfriend's sister) in my gallery. I did forget to take pictures before the party - thankfully my best friend had her camera.

I had so many problems with my first cake. It was a castle cake for my neice (in my photos). I couldnt get the icing smooth, it turned out looking nothing like the picture I was trying to copy. If I showed you the two pictures you wouldnt even believe it. The dog licked the icing and everything. I finally ran to walmart and bought some fondant. My first crash course in working with fondant. That fixed where I couldnt smooth my icing. I got the cake to the party in time, informed her and everyone else they didnt have to eat the gross wilton fondant, but she loved the cake. She said I was the best aunt in the whole world.

My best cake day ( what a fun idea ) was the first time I won the State Fair. I think I've shared this before but to give the back story.....

It was my very first time entering a cake in any competition. I had been planning my cake for months and practiced it a couple times. It finally came down to the day before it was due so I had to do it. It was a hat box with an off set lid covered in pink buttercream. Inside the box was a string of pearls, lace gloves, a lipstick, eye shadow and a pink Breast Cancer Awareness braclet. On the cake board was a Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon that said " For Grandma" on it. All made of fondant. I had made this cake to honor my Grandma who had passed away of Cancer a few months earlier. ( The Fair was in October which is also Breast Cancer Awarness month.) When I finished the cake, I took pictures and went to download them on my computer. I saw the date and realized it would have been my Grandma's 91st birthday. ( insert goosebumps here!!) I started bawling my eyes out! icon_cry.gif But somehow I knew that she was with me and I'd do well in the competition.

Fast forward to a few days later. The State Fair opens and I was dying to know how I did. They don't call so I had to drive 45 minutes to get to the Fair again. I went directly to find my cake in the display cases and as I walked up, I could see ribbons beside it. My heart was beating so fast!! I won my very first, first place blue ribbon AND a purple rosette ribbon for what I later found out was "Best in Show". WOOHOO!!! Lots of people were walking around viewing the cakes and when they came to mine I just had to evesdrop on their comments. So kind, so nice!! And when I got the nerve to tell a couple people that was my cake..they were so excited for me. Complete strangers! I called my husband, my mom and a dear friend from right there just to tell them I won! All the while with tears in my eyes, knowing my Grandma would have been proud!

Such great stories!
Mine was over a teacher appreciation cake, too. Both of my kids are in the same elementary school, so I made a cake for each teacher, and a third cake for the principal and staff. When I delivered them, DD's teacher actually got tears in her eyes. The office staff all raved over the cake, but then the next day, the principal called me just to say thank you and tell me how much they enjoyed it. It just made me feel great to do a little something for the people who do so much for my kids.

That is such a great story KimAZ. Congrats on your win, I did in fact have goosebumps when you said too.

My best cake day was on my dd's 4th b-day. She had seen on this site a castle cake that she wanted, a big one with all the turrets and everything. I had never attempted such a thing yet so was a little nervous. It took me several practice runs but on the big day she had a grand castle. She just loved it and was so excited to share it with her friends. It was great. icon_rolleyes.gif

I am sure I will be having more best cake days as time passes but I would have to say that my best cake day so far was the day I won 1st place at my first cake competiton (and the only one I have entered). I made the cake that is my avatar and it came out just like I wanted it to! My family was there cheering for me and I was excited!

That is so sweet about your son. My best cake day was when the bride sneaked downstairs (while she should have been having been getting dressed) to take a peek at the cake. Her makeup had already been done, and she saw the cake and started to cry because she thought it was so beautiful. Then as the guests were leaving the reception they were trying to get more cake.

My best cake day ever had to be making my two year old niece's cinderella cake. For a two year old to recognize it and want to play with it was awesome. My sister had her party at a pizza place and tons of strangers kept walking in the room and looking at the cake and asking my sister where she got it. One little girl even brought her mom in and told her "See I told you it was Cinderella, I want that cake for my birthday." My sister was so impressed and when I took the doll out and gave it to my niece she gave me a huge hug and never let the doll go. That is my best day.

My best cake day was when I delivered a castle cake to a client (sis of a neighbor) and she was just awed by the cake. The amazing thing about it is that she let me have free reign on the decor as long as it had pink and blue on it to go with the Cinderella theme she was doing for her 3 yr-old. To my shock, I had matched her colors perfectly and she was thrilled with my first ever castle cake!

I am not professional by any means, I don't do trial runs of cakes, I just dive right in and wing it. My best cake day was when I made my sons pirate ship birthday cake. He is only 3, and so he doesn't see all the flaws in the cakes. He was so proud of it! He also tells everyone his mom makes his cakes. It is that feeling all over again anytime I make special cookies, cupcakes, or anything for his pre-k. He is so proud to bring them and that his mom made them. Its all worth it. I actually feel sorry for the kids who have store bought cakes - poor things! icon_sad.gif

Last fall I booked a baby shower cake with the grandma-to-be who was hosting the shower. She went to Hobby Lobby, bought the new Wilton Tiered Cakes book, picked out the cake she wanted and took it to the grocery store to get the bakery to make it. They laughed at her. She took it to an upscale bakery and they quoted her $500. By the time she called me, any news was good news! She didn't know why it could possibly be so expensive, and I had to explain to her about all the minute details and how long it would take. We came up with a scaled-down version of the cake that she was happy with. She was a nervous wreck..kept calling me and emailing me to ask questions, even requested a "tasting" the week before the shower! I was so freaked out because everybody knows those Wilton cakes aren't even real cake -- they're done by professionals with styrafoam, and real cakes don't often look like that. I was a nervous wreck that she would be disappointed no matter what I did! However, when I showed up at the community center with the cake, her face was just glowing and she said "It looks exactly like the one in the book!" Well...that's about the highest praise I could imagine! She also wrote me a sweet email a few days later saying my cake made the shower perfect. And that...is my best cake day. icon_smile.gif Here's the cake:

In February, my stepdaughter asked me to bake the cake for her wedding shower which was being held in May. My only experience was making birthday cakes throughout the years for my daughtersthat's it. Certainly nothing grand or fancy. So since February, I've made 11 practice cakes in preparation (all different, using different techniques learned here at CC). The shower was this past Sunday and she loved it! Everyone loved it. It was so nice to be able to present her with a cake that she enjoyed sharing with her family and friends. I'll post pictures one of these days. I'm still stuck with an archaic camera that you have to have the film developed.

My best cake day was the Monday after Mother's Day. My mother had sort of volunteered me to make a cake for the Mother's Tea her church was having. The Women's Club would have been happy with a couple of sheet cakes, but I decided to test the waters and make a big cake. It was the first 3 tiered cake, and the largest, that I ever made. Everyone absolutely loved it. I received a thank you note from the head of the club the other day. It just made my day icon_biggrin.gif

So far to date, my best cake day would be my son Trenton's birthday cake. His cake was a huge disaster. It was my 2nd fondant cake and the chocolate fondant was crumbling into little chunks. I went to bed that night after fighting with the fondant, but had the cake covered.
I woke up and my kids said "what's that? I thought Trent was having an x-box cake, that looks like an old beat up piece of luggage" They were right and not trying to be mean. They are little and just stating the obvious. My DH said it was time to go buy one from Krogers icon_cry.gif
I went to Krogers to buy the cake but ended up buying more stuff to make regular MMF and some chocolate chips to toss in. I'm so glad I didn't cave in and buy one!!! I pulled the x-box cake with controller off to the best of my abilities and my son was so happy with it. Everyone was talking about it and said how great it tasted. I made the cake the exact size of a real x-box too. My cousin who always cuts my cakes down had people coming up and saying it's the best tasting and looking cake they have ever seen. (they don't get out often--bless their hearts!) She was upset icon_lol.gif , but that's okay with me. The best part of the day was not any of that but the fact that I didn't let my little boy down. IT WAS WORTH ALL THE HASSLE TO SEE HIS FACE LIGHT UP!

Well I guess I should say my best cake day was the day I won Best of Show for my Lambeth cake but it's not.

The absolute best day to date is when I showed a retiring US Navy Master Chief her retirement cake. SHE CRIED!!!!!!! I made a Master Chief cry!!!!!! She was so happy that someone would do something nice for her by creating such a beautiful cake. She was the one paying me for the cake too but left the creativity up to me. Instead of the $65 I asked for she paid me $100!!! I tried to turn it down but she just shoved the check in my hand and said "Thank You"!

Mine was probably last Saturday. I delivered my first quinceanera cake for 300 people (that came out GREAT) and then came home to do a tequila bottle cake for my sister. It felt so cool doing two COMPLETELY different cakes in one weekend! Am I a nerd or what? icon_smile.gif

Wow, great stories! My best cake was a pink castle cake for my neice. When I arrived her mom was busy and didn't see it until I had it settled on the table. Neither knew what I was bringing, and her mom assumed that I was just going to do an "ordinary" sheet cake, typical for a 4 year-old. NOOOOO! Anyway, my niece and her mom came in together and they both stopped dead in their tracks. My neice started jumping up and down and dancing about her princess castle. My SIL stood there with tears flowing down her face. After a rough spot in our relationship we had recently hashed it all out and were on our way back to having the relationship we felt we should have.
That cake will always represent so much more than a happy four year-old!!
