How Do You Use Luster Dust Effectively?

I use it both dry and with lemon extract. I bought a brand new blush brush and use it to apply the dust dry. I dip it and shake off the excess and go to work.
When I use the extract, I like it to be the consistency of paint as well. It goes on best if you use the right sized brush like someone else mentione.
I have also used it in my airbrush both ways. It works great if you spray it out dry. If using my extract, I make it really watery.
OK, one question I have.... what does the luster dust taste like when mixed with clear vanilla..... I ask because I know vanilla tastes horrible until put with sugar etc... and well the same for the alcohol too... my oldest son wants a rim cake, and of course the rim is chrome so I would have to find out how to do that and use the luster dust.... I don't want these teens tasting alcohol.... or have a bad taste when bit into......
I used lustre dust this weekend. I mixed it with vodka. However, I di it a little differently. I dipped my brush into the vodka first, then dipped it into the lustre dust (kinda like how a nailtech does it with the liquid and powder when she does fake nails). It worked perfectly! no streaks - no problems!! I was amazed. And it didn't really use all that much of the lustre dust either. This was my first time using lustre dust by the way.
Wow Mis dawn I will have to try this. I to have the same problem with the luster dust I can never get the right look that I see some cakes have, they look so nice and neat and mine to me looks so sloppy
. I will try your technique Misdawn and hopefully that'll help. Thanks great info on here.
I use luster dust all the time and much prefer the lemon extract to vodka. It dries so much faster and leaves a less streaky look. The lemon smell does not stay on the fondant or gum paste either...at least I can't tell it's there. I mix mine to a paint consistency ...but still fluid and then work quickly to spread it on as large an area as I can get. I rarely get full coverage on one coat. But after letting it dry I run a dry brush with dry luster dust over what I painted and kind of 'scrub' it in. It fills in any pesky streaks that might be left. Also, if you are painting a gold or silver piece, it helps to have your fondant or gum paste colored. I like yellow for gold and of course grey for the silver pieces. I recently did several Avenger theme cakes and used this technique for Thor's silver helmet and Iron Man's gold face mask.

AAfter trying many methods, I found this one to work the best. If you want to mix the liquid and dust in the beginning, I would recommend using am eye dropped. It is hard to pour the small amount of liquid you need. If I am going to need a large amount of it, I will pour some dust on one side of the dish and the vodka or clear extract on the other side. Using a paint brush, I move some of the powder into the middle and then mix in a littlenliquid at a time until I have a decent amoun and a good consistency. I have also found that a couple of coats works best, and it looks better as it dries.
